Caneel has a dock you tie up to. denis is recommended not to go into because of the reef.
I would rent the dingy for a full day, start at waterlemon cay and stop at all the north shore beaches on the way back.

I agree that a full day would be better = then you wouldn't have to hurry back - I have seen someplace on line where you can buy a dinghy step up - I can't remember what it was called - samoka

Or do the rope trick!
My wife and i spent two hours snorkeling in Trunk Bay.
We decided to get back to the dinghy and couldnt pull ourselves back in!
We tried and tried. After about 20mins of entertaining the fish and turtles, I held on to the side and she climbed up my back
Needlees to say, everytime i go i bring lots of rope, a ladder

If you rent from Cruz Bay Water Sports, they'll tell not to go any farther than Trunk. We could have easily as the water was very calm the day we went out. I can see how it could be an issue on a rougher day though, especially around Mary Point.
