Trip Report 2/3/07-2/10/07 - Part 5 -BVIs
This is the day for our trip on Born To Rhumb to the BVIs. It's a beautiful, clear morning as we make our way to the dock. Captain Kevin and his first mate Andi are very friendly and easy-going. Plenty of beer, soda, and water provided on board as well as the sandwiches and snacks we brought with us. My plan was to definitely go to the Baths on Virgin Gorda and get to the Soggy Dollar Bar. We head out toward Virgin Gorda and it's a truly beautiful ride.
After an hour or so, we're approaching the Baths, what a sight to behold! Those boulders are amazing. We have to jump in the water and swim to the shore (noodles and boogie boards provided.) They gave us a little info on the Baths on board, but we really did not know what to expect. Since we didn't have a guide we just forged ahead. Inside the boulders, it is quite breathtaking and beautiful, but also slippery and treacherous! I had no idea we'd be climbing and squeezing thru these boulders! I am definitly not "nature girl" by any stretch of the imagination, so this climbing, squeezing, and whatnot is not much fun. The kids are all having a great time, but I'm wondering "how much longer?" There were many, many people throughout the "trail" and we had a few areas where we had to wait for the crowds to get thru as well as some older folks who were really having a hard time of it. I felt badly for these folks, my guess is that they had no idea it would be this treacherous. We are all in bare feet, and the boulders are wet and sandy. I don't know what would happen if someone broke a leg in there...how would they even get a stretcher in to carry the person out???
Anyway, we reach the end of the trail, the beach is amazingly beautiful, take lots of pictures, and have to turn around to get back to where we started, ugh!
So we swim back to the boat, and are off to the
Willy T for lunch and to snorkel the caves at Norman Island. This was a suggestion of the captain. We had a great lunch, and the snorkeling at the caves was fun. The captain made an awesome batch of Painkillers, whew! They were great!
We continued on to Sandy Cay. Talk about beautiful! We didn't want to leave!
That is a picture in my mind that will stay with me forever, especially on a day like today with lots of snow and sleet going on outside.
We thought we'd try the Soggy Dollar next, but as we approached, we saw the crowds, and since the kids were pretty tired, we thought better of it and turned back toward St. John. Maybe we'll get there next trip. All in all, it was a perfect day. Certainly one to remember! I'd highly recommend trying a trip on Born to Rhumb! They were terrific.
Dinner that night was take out pizza from Cafe Roma, very good, hit the spot. (no noseeums on the boat, thank goodness!) Early to bed that night. Trunk Bay planned for the next day!

Hey Martini Girl I'm enjoying your trip reports!
I know what you mean about The Baths, it's pretty awesome to look at! I got frustrated slipping and squeezing and waiting on other people though. The crowd took away from the "awe" of the boulders. But glad we went and would do it again with someone who hadn't gone.
