The Fine Print
The Fine Print
We fly out on the 18th of April for my Daughter’s wedding on St John.
So, I decided to look closely at the “fine print” of the baggage allowances for Northwest Airlines. Pretty typical as far as carry-on stuff—“cannot exceed 45 linear inches (9 inches by 14 inches by 22 inches)” The personal item can be “a purse or briefcase or laptop computer or small backpack. Dimensions of the additional item must not exceed 15”X11”x6”.
I was pleasantly surprised when I looked at the very fine print for checked baggage. A small **explanation reads, “For Travel to/from Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, the first and second checked bags are free. All other ‘Domestic’ policies apply as indicated above.” This will be great since we have a few extra items for the wedding (dresses, gifts, shoes, etc.) and I was expecting to pay $40 each way for two checked bags. You can bet I'll have a copy of the fine print with me at check-in.

Don't mean to sound negative, but we fly out of MSP and since you are probably flying Delta out of Minneapolis that time of year I would be sure and check Delta's website. Have had mixed results in the last two months. In January, my daughter was flying nonstop to Tokyo with 3 bags Business Class and they wanted to charge her over $100. She had checked the website and knew it should be free. The gate agent said it came up on the computer with that amount. With much checking in the back room she got them free. Later in Jan. on a trip to San Antonio, a group of us all got 2 free bags checked, one each being golf clubs. But on the return, half of us were charged and the others not. It seems with the merger they have not caught up with all the changes.
Checking the Delta site, I would get one checked bag free. So, the worst it would be is $15 for two bags--much better than $40.
I will have a print out of the Northwest baggage statement with me when I board (we booked before the merger and I am using Northwest "miles" for my flight), so I would think I would only have to pay for the single bag on the return flight. We'll just have to wait and see how it goes down when we check in. If I can even get one bag checked for free, I'm happy.
