2 weeks no kids.......
2 weeks no kids.......
so, both kids are going to be at camp in northern-ish ontario (dh's old camp) at the same time for the first time--so we have two weeks in august by ourselves-
we'd like to plan a trip for at least a week (we will have been in Maine for a week at the beginning of August most likely).
outside of STJ (i think i want to remain on the continent) where would you go? all ideas /suggestions appreciated!

Hey there!
You're in NY...I'm not sure what part of NY...BUT...if you love the beach the Outerbanks of North Carolina (Nags Head) is a REALLY great place. We are an hour away and do long weekends A LOT....There are hotels and cottages...the best part is its not commercial like Myrtle Beach OR Virginia Beach...and I'm five miles away from VA Beach. When we go I feel like we are a million miles away from home...email me if you want more information I can give you some good input on where to stay/eat etc......there are some great restaurants and the beaches are BEAUTIFUL!!!

yeah there is a big festival at the end of July--every year- Usually i am up there the last week of july/first week of August, but i end up staying on island so i don;t pay too much attention to what's going on in town and who is playing--I'll have to change that behavior!Saltydog wrote:Hi Loria,

loria, I'm laughing at how much our kids are alike (we established that with the horrors of tween shopping!)
For the first time this summer both of our kids will be away at camp at the same time too. Only for us it will just be a week, in early July. I really tried to swing some time away alone to do volunteer work (I get a 40 hour sabbatical this year to do volunteer/NFP work) but the timing doesn't work with 2 other trips we're taking soon after.
After dropping the kids at camp you could make your way to Montreal (love it, but it's been years), down through Vermont, New Hampshire, and on to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. And there are so many beautiful places in Canada you could spend your whole time traveling there on your way home.
Let us know what you decide!

Although very touristy, Niagara Falls, Canada, is worth a visit, at least once...sounds, mist, and rainbows add to the visual of the roaring water. On a Saturday night last July the walks were packed, but on Sunday morning at seven we were almost alone. After the falls, a drive up the Niagara Parkway to Niagara-on-the-Lake brought a quick change of pace. Rural scenes and wineries abound, especially ice wine producers; green spaces and lake views, old inns and B&Bs, quaint shops and eateries on streets filled with colorful flowers, and the Shaw Festival with the choices of twelve plays in three venues, delighted us and will surely draw us back there again...a suggestion for a quiet, romantic getaway that could easily be a long weekend or longer.
Thanks all!

iprof--Niagara on the lake is truly spectacular and i agree the falls are wonderful--we pass thru there on the way to drop said children off at camp! might be anice way to spend some time (i did a trip with my youngest when he want' camp ready--we did the speedboat down to the whirlpools--totally a blast!
