September closings

Post by Peachtree »

Hello everyone. I've spent the last few weeks reading posts on the forum and have appreciated everyone's input. My wife and I are planning our first trip to St. John this coming September. We realize this is during the height of hurricane season but our schedule dictates when we travel.
I have seen several posts mentioning restaurant closings either from the recent economic situation or closings that occur during the low season(i.e. Chateaux Bourdeaux closed for good? and Shipwreck Landing closes for September).

Can anyone tell me which other restaurants typically close in September? I am hoping our choices for dining in Coral Bay aren't too limited due to the time of year and the economy.

Thank you.
Regards,

Thanks for the reply. The answer is even more depressing than I had imagined. Per the link there wasn't hardly anything open on the Coral Bay side last September. Perhaps we need to rethink our timing.

thanks again,

We always stay on the Cruz Bay side in September. There is very little open in Coral Bay in September. This year will more than likely be much worse.

You can expect more and longer closing this September. Not only will restaurants close, but many shops will close as well. I've heard many many businesses say that their sales are off 50%. Lots of people are losing their jobs and all of our small business are struggling just to pay the very very high rent and utility costs.
That having been said, September is my favorite month on St. John. It is quiet, there is plenty of parking, and you meet the most locals when the island isn't so busy with tourists. There will always be open places to eat and shop...so come, enjoy!

I would second the October thing. We went the first week in October last year and most were reopening that week so had plenty to choose from.

It certainly can be a great time to visit STJ and you will be heartily welcomed everywhere but --------------------- Definitely get trip insurance that defines all the contingencies - cancellation ahead of traveling, interruptions, evacuations, reimbursements, hotel costs should you have to leave a villa etc.
