Can anyone ID this tree?

Post by Agent99 »

Every once in a while I post a photo of this tree in bloom in April (I think). It is located on the Caneel grounds but no one I have asked so far knows what it is. Thought I'd try my luck again.

Methinks that's a "Tabebuia aurea", otherwise know as a Caribbean Trumpet Tree.

I'm no botanist but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Espress last night...

Randy, I think you've got it!! Here is an image of the "Tabebuia aurea". Looks spot on to me. Thanks very much!!! The blossom reminded me of azaleas and I wondered if it were related. My photo doesn't do it justice against a cobalt blue sky. It really is spectacular.

Yes I did, Anthony! In fact, if I ever quit abusing my liver, it would probably revolt!

Actually, I'm recovering from eye surgery, and I'm just sooooo happy to be able to see that big beautiful golden colored tree!!

Y'all did very well without my help! But I would like to add a little bit about these gorgeous trees..."yellow poui"( pronounced poo-e) is the usual common name here. They are not from the Caribbean, but the mainland of South America. On St John, you can see them planted at Caneel and on the Marsh family's property in Estate Carolina. They bloom sporadically in late winter/early spring, once it's dry enough for them to shed their leaves. Caneel also has a "pink poui" Tabebuia rosea the big tree on the east end of the gift shop. A yellow poui with a blue sky is one of the most magnificent sights imaginable.

Bert-
I was going to plan a surprise trip for my Amy around then, but I think we're leaning towards a longer vaca down there in the fall...

Thanks for the info on the pink one Hugo. I'll be on the lookout for it. I do believe it was the third week in April a couple of years ago when my photo was taken. We'll be there the same time this year so with any luck I'll catch both the pink and yellow in bloom. Has it been a very wet winter so far?

I wouldn't call it a very wet winter, but we have had more February rain than usual...no "dry season" flowers out yet, a lot of the deciduous trees just starting to drop leaves.
