One of the reasons we never used boxes to bring supplies to the boat was because there could possibly be cockroaches lurking in the boxes. This had happened in the past so I'd be careful what I brought into the house. If you use the boxes empty them before bringing them inside.

I know the NPS has been working on the shuttle idea for a couple of years now, trying to begin with the taxi drivers (good luck!). The rental cars would not be greatly affected, since people would need them to get to their rental houses anyway...the park plan would include a big parking lot near Cruz Bay where cars would be left. I'll see if I can find out what's happening with this concept and report back.

I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me but it's Joshie's avatar playing tricks on me!

. . . now what's this topic about? Oh yeah! Somebody clean up the rusted old wrecked cars, machinery, boat parts and un-identified peices of junk that lay on the side of the road!! Who's gonna move it? I don't know! Where will it go? I don't know!

What would Joshie do?
I've got 2 tickets to paradise~Pack your bags we'll leave tonight!

Cost effective isn't really the issue. The NPS built what seemed at the time to be huge new parking lots exactly 20 years ago. I now have to allow an extra 15 minutes or so to drive the length of Northshore road in season ,due to the number of cars parked in the road. There are people parking on the Trunk Bay switchbacks to the east and the Trunk Bay overlook to the west. There are people totally blocking a lane at Maho every day. Quality of life is seriously affected, as is the quality of the "visitor experience", I should think!
I believe the Park would have the shuttle be free or a minimal charge.

1. Are you involved in any St. John causes or projects?
- We contribute to a lot of events and causes and occasionally attend some of the low-key fundraiser events. We don't attend the fancy "gala" type parties because I practically have a breakdown figuring out what we'd wear.
- I am constantly picking up trash and litter everywhere I go.
- We try to recycle packing material whenever possible.
- I am trying to find something that comes in cans that I like to drink. (No luck so far.) We do have can recycling now, but no program for my Ting bottles. http://www.on-stjohn.com/2008/10/08/rec ... -momentum/

2. Name at least one concrete thing you think could be done to make St. John a better place.
- Pick up trash and litter when you see it.
- Recycle styrofoam packing peanuts. We will take them (in plastic bags) at St. John Spice and I'm pretty sure other businesses that mail a lot of packages like Donald Schnell Studios might be interested also. Give them a call to check.
- We need a glass grinder to recycle all the glass bottles. If you have a spot for one, contact The St. John Community Foundation at 340-693-9410..

Maho Bay Camps has a glass blowing program that recycles bottles from the camp's trash. Would they consider accepting & recycling glass from other areas of the island?

I feed the stray cats while on Island not much but makes me feel good and they sure like it.

recycling station would be good
I like the north shore shuttle idea but mostly because I could save some change. It would be terrible for the taxi drivers though. Thats a major good paying job source for the locals. Took the shuttle to Salt Pond our first trip. That was one great deal even if I did get motion sickness.

Maybe because the NPS would be giving $75 parking tickets for parking anywhere that wasn't in a parking lot? This is less of an issue this year, I expect it will be even less of one next year, so maybe it's a moot point for the time being.
THe Park cannot charge admission because of the unusual set-up on St. John and the fact that Park roads are through roads (I could tell you plenty about the history of that, if you're interested). Most Parks have an entrance fee, most have pretty strict controls on traffic and parking.

- I really think something should be done about the free-range chickens. They're a menace.

Improve St John? Opening soon:
"The Other Side" - a new dining establishment in Cruz Bay, owned and managed by Ron & Ruth, serving delicious spiced dishes of free-range chicken!
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.
