Day seven

Woke up to a rainy morning, but we knew it would blow over. Usual breakfast on the deck and then out to the beach. We went back to Waterlemon but in assessing the currents at Leinster Bay it looked like it would be a tough snorkel with a strong current so we changed plans and went to Maho Bay.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284104941/" title="297 maho left side by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3601/328 ... 05b193.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="297 maho left side"></a>

It was early and we were some of the first folks on the beach so we got a nice spot down on the right side and set up.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284016337/" title="263 maho beach by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3614/328 ... a04fbf.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="263 maho beach"></a>

The sky was pretty cloudy, but we enjoyed watching the pelicans. After a while we headed in to snorkel. The water was quite stirred up so visibility was not the best. We found a small turtle in the center of the bay:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284102661/" title="282 maho turtle 2 by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3638/328 ... 2c1f23.jpg" width="500" height="465" alt="282 maho turtle 2"></a>

and then headed over to the right side to see what we could find. Mostly small fish. Queen angelfish:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284923574/" title="281 maho queen angelfish john by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3626/328 ... 22e19e.jpg" width="500" height="337" alt="281 maho queen angelfish john"></a>

what is this fish?

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284839724/" title="275 maho john needs id by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3537/328 ... 7b5365.jpg" width="500" height="281" alt="275 maho john needs id"></a>

more small fish:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284838914/" title="271 Maho fry and fish by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3302/328 ... 054140.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="271 Maho fry and fish"></a>

We did find a scorpionfish blending in to the rocks. Maho is the only place I have found these fish. They are neat looking!

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284102933/" title="283 maho scorpionfish by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3504/328 ... 358376.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="283 maho scorpionfish"></a>

We also found a large ray:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284104673/" title="294 maho ray turning by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3546/328 ... 2c7d12.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="294 maho ray turning"></a>

and John discovered a Nassau grouper. It kept going in and out of the rocks, though, and the only picture I have is of its tail! There are lots of little nooks to explore along the rocks that have interesting creatures in them.

Back to shore where we discovered that in addition to our previous iguana and chicken neighbors, we had a couple of new additions—two young ladies listening to a radio, chugging glass bottles of beer, and talking in loud voices about the multiple partner hookup they enjoyed the previous evening and how sore they were now. Time. To. Go.

Back to Gallows for a relaxing (quiet!) afternoon reading books on the deck.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284926934/" title="302 Gallows cruise ship by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3302/328 ... 21e258.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="302 Gallows cruise ship"></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284105787/" title="304 Gallows Barnicle Bill day by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3369/328 ... 987f67.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="304 Gallows Barnicle Bill day"></a>

I made a large cheese plate that I figured we could snack off of for the rest of the trip.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284105557/" title="301 gallows cheese plate by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3556/328 ... f7d0aa.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="301 gallows cheese plate"></a>

Later in the day we headed over to Trunk Bay for our traditional late afternoon snorkel.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284927232/" title="304.1 trunk at sundown by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3295/328 ... 43ef86.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="304.1 trunk at sundown"></a>

The beach was beautiful.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284927870/" title="307 trunk cay by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3339/328 ... 906b78.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="307 trunk cay"></a>

There could not have been more than 10 people on the entire beach! The water was a little stirred up, but we still had fun—we saw all of the snappers—it is obvious people are feeding them.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284113135/" title="347 trunk snapper close up by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3135/328 ... 14abc1.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="347 trunk snapper close up"></a>

We also found needlefish:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284110521/" title="330 trunk needlefish 2 by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3325/328 ... 3009de.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="330 trunk needlefish 2"></a>

groupers, coneys:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N ... 855/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3336/328 ... 44bf2a.jpg" width="500" height="281"></a>

flamingo tounge:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284108165/" title="318 trunk flamingo tounge by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3158/328 ... 6cc608.jpg" width="500" height="379" alt="318 trunk flamingo tounge"></a>

a puddingwife:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284932634/" title="334 trunk puddingwife 3 by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3664/328 ... 89ace6.jpg" width="500" height="467" alt="334 trunk puddingwife 3"></a>

and many other fish. The coral is in decent shape if you go far enough out. We elected not to go all the way around the cay because the sun was starting to set and we wanted to get back.

Back to Gallows for the sunset:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284972178/" title="gallows barnicle bill by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3359/328 ... 43e787.jpg" width="500" height="368" alt="gallows barnicle bill"></a>

And then off to dinner at La Plancha del Mar. Review here:

Tuna:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284114673/" title="356 la plancha del mar tuna by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3566/328 ... b6d73f.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="356 la plancha del mar tuna"></a>

The usual stargazing topped off another spectacular day.

Day eight

Back to Waterlemon again, and this time the current looked OK, so we headed out.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284951238/" title="402 leinster left side by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3471/328 ... d933e6.jpg" width="500" height="281" alt="402 leinster left side"></a>

This year we decided to head for the cay from the beach for the first time. We usually walk out to the point and then head in, but I don't like the rocky entry—I'm always worried that there might be some coral there, and plus I was hoping to find some eagle rays or starfish on the swim across the bay.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N ... 724/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3171/328 ... 226846.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="359 Leinster Bay to Waterlemon Cay"></a>

We arrived on the beach, and were getting ready to get into the water when I saw this:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284936818/" title="359.1 leinster dolphin fin by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3324/328 ... a1aa1f.jpg" width="500" height="326" alt="359.1 leinster dolphin fin"></a>

At first I thought it was a shark, but after a minute I saw two more fins, another adult and a baby, and realized it was dolphins. They came in so close to the beach, I could not believe it.

Of course, everyone on the beach headed in to the water. It's not often that I will complain in a trip report, but some of the people in the water this day were soooo obnoxious! Flailing their arms around, chasing after the dolphins, churning the water like mad, shouting at the top of their lungs…I actually have a picture of one of these jerks grabbing onto the dorsal fin of one of the dolphins. I thought about posting it so you could see what an idiot he was but decided not to let him muck up my report. :x

Of course they drove the dolphins away, out towards the open water. We did not follow--I thought it was very stupid to chase the dolphins around, especially since the dolphins had a baby with them. Who knows what the dolphins might do? They’re wild animals!

So, we headed out, floating along towards the cay, and all of a sudden saw this:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3288429329/" title="372 leinster dolphin approaching by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3173/328 ... 8e86da.jpg" width="452" height="500" alt="372 leinster dolphin approaching"></a>

One of the dolphins came back! Almost everybody else was still chasing the mother and the baby around, so we got to spend a few minutes observing this beautiful animal. It swam around us a few times:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284939024/" title="374 leinster dolphin hanging out by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3435/328 ... 6b61b8.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="374 leinster dolphin hanging out"></a>

and came very close to John:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284117063/" title="371 leinster dolphin 15 by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3237/328 ... 8a9600.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="371 leinster dolphin 15"></a>

He got this photo:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284938880/" title="373 einster dolphin close up by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3367/328 ... e7af05.jpg" width="500" height="281" alt="373 einster dolphin close up"></a>

The dolphin was just hanging out:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284116893/" title="370 leinster dolphin 13 by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3155/328 ... 5397b4.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="370 leinster dolphin 13"></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284937612/" title="366 leinster dolphin 6 by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3210/328 ... 4d4894.jpg" width="500" height="488" alt="366 leinster dolphin 6"></a>

You could hear the dolphins talking to each other under water! It was sooo cool. Of course, who knows what they were saying…maybe that we looked like a good lunch, I don't know.

After just a few minutes, the dolphin went back and joined the other two. We never did see the baby and the other adult, just this one. It was such an incredible experience. I'll never forget it.

So, after that, everything else was going to be gravy. We found a turtle in the bay:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284940910/" title="392 Leinster turtle 9 by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3272/328 ... 2020e6.jpg" width="500" height="300" alt="392 Leinster turtle 9"></a>

and lots of sea stars.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284119579/" title="393 leinster scrawled cowfish (2) by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3401/328 ... 9a2d9f.jpg" width="500" height="281" alt="393 leinster scrawled cowfish (2)"></a>

Most of them were too deep to photograph, but there had to be at least 100 of them scattered about.

We took our time heading out to the cay—it was a long swim, but not hard. I think we will always go this way from now on. The snorkel was very enjoyable—no current to fight, good visibility, and beautiful coral around the back of the cay. For some reason we did not really take pictures at the cay itself. Not sure why.

Scrawled cowfish with trunkfish:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N ... 559/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3524/328 ... cb3336.jpg" width="500" height="484" alt="400 waterlemon cowfish and trunkfish"></a>

Lunch was at Compass Rose. We went because we read in the local papers that the restaurant now featured Miss Etta’s West Indian cuisine, but she had already moved on by the time we visited. Bummer! Review here:

We snorkeled around the cay. Visibility was not the best but we did make some interesting finds, including a huge needlefish:

We stayed until sunset. What a beautiful beach.

What a terrific day.

I had planned to cook dinner that night, but decided I was too lazy, so we headed out. We had planned to try Café Roma, but when we got there were so many people smoking that we just could not stay. I'm not used to people smoking in indoor restaurants anymore—it was banned in Boston years ago. It does not bother me outside, but I can't handle it inside (if I know I have another option, that is!). Too bad for us, because their menu was exactly what I was in the mood for.

Instead, we ended up at Paradiso. Review here:

Day nine

Out of the house by 8 AM, we stopped by Baked in the Sun and picked up some tasty treats for breakfast:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284133271/" title="455 baked in the sun by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3340/328 ... 344770.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="455 baked in the sun"></a>

We ended up at Hawksnest.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284958444/" title="472 hawksnest by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3319/328 ... fe4d12.jpg" width="500" height="262" alt="472 hawksnest"></a>

Keeping the trip report up to date!

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284955044/" title="457 hawksnest becky (2) by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3544/328 ... ac9e47.jpg" width="500" height="281" alt="457 hawksnest becky (2)"></a>

We enjoyed the scenery for a while then headed in to snorkel. We encountered a jack feeding frenzy:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284134559/" title="464 hawksnest jacks 9 (2) by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3244/328 ... 5c9ca0.jpg" width="500" height="281" alt="464 hawksnest jacks 9 (2)"></a>

and found a huge mutton snapper.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284134397/" title="463 hawksnest mutton snapper by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3527/328 ... 80da09.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="463 hawksnest mutton snapper"></a>

Also saw the lovely elkhorn forest and a school of tang:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284136157/" title="468.1Hawksnest tang by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3211/328 ... b2970a.jpg" width="500" height="321" alt="468.1Hawksnest tang"></a>

among other small fish.

Red Hind:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284136519/" title="470 hawksnest red hind by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3495/328 ... 09b5f7.jpg" width="500" height="281" alt="470 hawksnest red hind"></a>

We made this a shorter snorkel because the water felt really cold for some reason.

We spent some time just hanging out in the water. It was not as cool close to shore.

It wouldn't be a trip report without a foot picture! :

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3284136785/" title="471.1 hawksnest feet by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3576/328 ... 9b4233.jpg" width="500" height="266" alt="471.1 hawksnest feet"></a>

When we got out of the water the beach had gotten really crowded, so we decided to head into town for lunch at the Banana Deck. Review here:

</a><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3580/328 ... 5f6329.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="481 banana deck view 2"></a>

Spicy mahi wrap:

BLT salad with blackened chicken:

After lunch we went down to St. John Spice and did some shopping and visited with Ron and Ruth for a while. This is the only shopping I did all trip! I just ran out of time. I did not even have a chance to go over to the Schnell studios to see if they had finally started making those plates I first asked for in 2003 (I'm guessing…NOT!).

Back to Gallows for a final snorkel at Frank Bay.

Elkhorn coral:

It started raining while we were in the water:

We went back to the unit and enjoyed a glass of wine while enjoying the final sunset of this trip. Sunset:

then dinner at Zozos. The food was good, but most of the pictures came out blurry. Here’s the bread pudding that we shared for dessert:

Tomorrow, wrap up and some on-season versus off-season observations.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

I took lunch at just the right time today!

Fantastic report! I gasped when I saw that fin. Wow, what an experience. And boo to the jerks in the water.

Thanks, Becky!

Wow, I am so jealous of your dolphin experience! How frustrating that those people acted like that though. I just don't get some people.

As for your experience with the two "ladies" at Maho, that's when you wish a ranger would show up and write them two tickets each...one for amplified music and the other for glass...

Dolphins!! How cool!!
It's to bad some people just don't get it.

That flamingo tongue is WAY cool!!

Becky, I can't thank you enough for the education you have given me. I love to snorkel and every year I get a little better at it and even enjoy it more. Plus your resturant reviews are priceless.

Great TR

Thanx :)

I give credit to the one dolphin that came back to hang out w/ you. He knew you were not the annoying jerk from earlier and you got the reward of him swimming w/ you. That is a fantastic encounter! A special memory for sure!

OMG - I am speachless. I've got to follow you on a snorkel sometimes

It must have been fantastic to swim with that dolphin and shame on the other people that don't understand better than to harm animals. How frustrating!

What type of camera do you have? Was it a Canon?

Liamsaunt, you really need to put some type of health warning on your trip reports. Maybe something like:

"Warning, reading our reports and viewing our pictures will likely make you spend lots of money in order to travel immediately to STJ".

And really, are those wonderful pictures of your very yummy food dishes necessary? We are on a diet here.

Becky-- your trip reports are always so wonderful. I swear you could assemble all of the info together and write a book!

(With recipes on the side of course!)
