Memphis retaurants?

Post by pipanale »

Help. I'm in Memphis next week for work (Tues-Fri). I am also going with a coworker who's a vegetarian. She will eat fish though.

Where should we go? I don't think we'll necessarily have time/energy to go downtown, but depending on how horribly the tip goes, we may.

Anyone have any recommendations? Good BBQ? And...what is Memphis BBQ? They're all about the ribs, right?

Rendevous Ribs is the most popular spot for ribs in Memphis. They are only open for dinner, I believe. They are dry rub, which I'm not usually interested in, but these are good. Its a basic place, don't expect anything fancy.

I also recommend the smoked chicken wings at Rum Boogie....because you can't get those just anywhere. And they are yummy!

Both of these are downtown, I don't think I've ever eaten away from that area. The most popular BBQ not in downtown in called Interstate BBQ, but I can't help you with location.

You DO have too much time on your hands today! Should I send you my List of Things To Do?

I do think that's the place. Its been recommended to me several times, but I've never made it there myself, so I guess I can't be sure.

We usually go to Memphis to pick up our nephew who lives in Philadelphia. He is a classical musician and nearly a vegetarian, although he does eat chicken. We usually go to Corky's BBQ, they have several locations, and they serve the "wet" ribs and many other selections. They have a website.

We have been to Neely's Interstate also, and it was very good, but we just liked Corky's a little better and it is closer to the airport.

When we went to STJ last June we used the Park and Fly option at the Radisson and went to Corky's the night before we were to fly out at 6AM the next morning. Our waitress there was very funny and friendly and of course the food was excellent.

Which part of town will you be staying?

Rondevous is downtown and would not work for a vegetarian! It is meat heaven. It is great.

Wontongirl is all knowing re: restaurants in Memphis.

We'll help you narrow down your options depending on the part of town.

Meetings are out on the eastern end of things. We're at the Colonial Country Club. We're staying over where 240 hits 57...Park Avenue.

I do have one night on my own there...so I could go to mean heaven or some other place that will make me happy

You'll be out there won't you?

Germantown restaurants may be your best bet. Think many of the restaurants listed in Loria's link are out there. I sent wonton a message.

The entrance to Rendezvous in a back alley. It's awesome! You'll think, where the hell am I going?

wontongirl sent me this...

Yia yias at saddle creek out poplar east of 240. My favorite places are downtown though. Ronnie grisanti's midtown on poplar avenue.( not frank grisantis in embassy suites)Dyers burgers on Beale, that ought to put his friend over the edge!! They are deep fried in grease!! Spindini on south main. Stella downtown, automatic slims tonga club downtown, sekisui, gus fried chicken downtown, the cupboard is a great grandma veggie plate lunch kind of place. It's on union midtown and I think only open at lunch. Bari on cooper is suppose to be good but we havnt tried it yet.For BBQ. Ribs at rendezvous downtown & sandwich plates at interstate BBQ out near graceland. Amerigo is an Italian restaurant close to embassy suites & PF changs. I hear alot of great things about Blue Fin but I've only had drinks there.I'll think some on it today.

wonton introduced me to Stella's & Automatic Slims...they are 2 of my favorite restaurants, but they're downtown.

Also, Memphis has some big tennis going on this week.

I don't think you are into tennis (just in case you are), but the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships & Cellular South Cup is at the Racquet Club of Memphis this week (Feb. 13-22)

Pete Sampras & Lleyton Hewitt had an exhibition match last night. Lleyton won.

I strongly second Yia Yias. We found it one night passing through Memphis after a very long business trip. It was a wonderful respite after several days of subpar conference cuisine! They have several pastas and fish items, but I love the wood fire roasted chicken. It is one of their specialties and has these wonderful caper berries that you don't see used in most restaurant fare.If you only have one night for "meat", make it Rendevouz. It is an experience every southern meat eater should have once!

If I'm not mistaken, they have some seafood dishes at BB King's down on Beale Street. I have only been to the one here in Nashville, but the food and ambiance were excellent.

Rendezvous is definitely not for folks who don't love meat!

The Blue Fish on Young in midtown has good seafood. As far as good bbq - we love Jim and Nicks (actually from AL). Jim and Nicks and Corky's would have options for your friend.

I was at the tennis match last night - Sampras did not play so good. Pretty much got his butt handed to him by Hewitt! But it was fun to see them play each other!
Really want to go see Roddick play tomorrow!
