HELP! Checking golf clubs w/45-min. layover?

Post by jigzmom »

This isn't about a trip to the USVI's but I know you all are seasoned travelers and will give me the best advice!!

I'm headed to Panama City, Florida on Sunday with a friend, last-minute trip. We plan to play golf two or three times while we're there (Sun-Fri). Her clubs are already there. We have a 45-minute layover in Atlanta. Both flights are on Delta but there's a plane change; my other bag will be a carry on.

The course we plan to play (muni/low fees) does not rent clubs but requires all players to have a bag. The course will 'loan' me a bag with a few crappy clubs but I can use my friend's clubs to play. I've checked around about renting a set for the week and the prices are over $100. Would you take your own clubs, pay the $15 baggage fee and risk them not arriving with you? Or just use your friend's clubs?

Thanks for your suggestions/help/comments!!!!

If you're OK using your friend's clubs (I can't use most women's clubs - they're too short for me) then that's what I'd do. Easier travel, plus you have an excuse if you have a crappy game. (Me - I need all the excuses I can get when it comes to my golf game. See? I'm already blaming the clubs!)

But since you're playing a few times you might want your own clubs. You could check the on-time record for the first flight and see how likely it is to be on time. Also give the airline a call to see if they think they can get the clubs onto your connecting flight given the time, and if not, when's the next flight and will they deliver the clubs to you? Be sure to put your local address somewhere in your bag.

Thanks for the tips & idea, chicagoans! I'm really leaning toward taking the clubs with me. I know there are several daily flights from ATL to Panama City, so if they don't make my flight (9:45am) they'll get there later in the day, I would hope. I'll put the local address and phone number in the bag, thanks for that tip!

As a new golfer I definately don't need any excuses for poor play, it's the norm. :?
