Private Taxi

Post by barnbob »

Hi all. We are scheduled to go to St. John in a week. In the past (most recent being October for Omar), we have used Freddie from Dynamic Tours as a private taxi to get to and from Red Hook. I booked through the website, as usual and waited a while for a confirmation. Eventually, I received a call from Freddie informing me that new regulations required that private taxis at the airport must be booked through a travel agency (or villa agency) as part of a tour. ...something about private taxis not being allowed on the airport pickup area. So, he is trying to figure out how/whom I am to do this with as it must be prepaid (supposedly another part of the requirement). He seemed (rightfully) frustrated with this arrangement.

Has anyone else come across this yet? We had no issue in October, so it must be a fairly new thing.

We talked to Rachel again yesterday & booked her for our May trip....don't know if she falls under this new requirement or not (hope not!)...but she didn't mention anything about it. We used her last May, LOVED her as many here have booked with her also.
Haven't heard of this new requirement though.

I don't remember any problem meeting Rachel at Red Hook but I do remember she had us sign a paper that said she was picking us up at the dock on our way back to STT. She said they would not let her near the cabs if she didn't have this paper.

Not sure if anything has changed.

We didnt have any problem in October either with Freddie. I'm not sure when things changed (or for whom). Hopefully we will hear from him soon.

You can always just walk across the exit road - up the steps to the entrance road across from the Rental Car Lot - you are now out of the airport and can deal with any cab you want. 2 or 3 minutes max walk.
The Taxi Association has always had the franchise for airport pickup and non members are not allowed to pick up unless it is pre booked AND pre paid. Enforcement is sometimes strict ///sometimes lax.
