Ambien users?

Post by jdw »

I am going to try Ambien for the first time next week. I will be on an international flight and usually have problems sleeping on a plane but I need to be rested and ready to work when I arrive so I am going to give Ambien a try.

I have a prescription for 10 mg. Will that be strong enough? Do I take it before the flight, after dinner? Will I feel groggy for the rest of the day?

Thanks for any advice.

j.

Do you have time to do a test run?? That way you can see what your reaction will be without ruining your trip. I have used Ambien and had a bad reaction of sleep walking; it was horrible. But I know a lot of people that have used it successfully.

Sleep walking!!! I certainly wouldn't want that to happen on a plane! I am not leaving until 2/14 so I guess I could try it at home one night.

My SIL take it and loves it. I recently started taking Melatonin and I am so happy with it. I sleep all night and don't have a hard time falling asleep anymore. I love it. Are you thinking of taking it regularly or just as needed??

PLEASE do a dry run first!!!!!!!!! 1) you want to see if you suffer from ambien hangover --honestly , ambien has been a godsend for my husband who does a lot of international travel--and 2) you want to see how you react to it in general --for me it is a nightmare-
at first, at home I was okay taking 1/2 of an ambien, but i would have to take it before 10 pm--and i still felt a bit out of it the next day ( i have major insomnia issues as well) --i never had issues at home that i KNOW of. full disclosure, i am very sensitive to many medications -- the normal dose of allergy meds makes me grind my teeth--etc,

however, on one flight to lisbon, i took half an ambien--we flew thru Zurich, i DO NOT remember zurich (well i remember aspects) and my husband tells me that i was behaving very weird (in fact he was more than rather upset--i was apparently a bit out of it)--but i did end up with about 75 dollars worth of swiss chocolate that i didn't need and didn't remember buying--scary . I have SWORN off ambien since then.

what i experienced apparently happens to a small minority of persons--but you don't want to be alone and happen to find out that you are among them.

AMbien can be a godsend, my husband arrives rested and refreshed for meetings all the time--he takes an ambien the minute he boards and that is that. I on the other hand---well.......
I have had wonderful luck with tylenol PM-(and only 1....) but only at home.
< leaving on the 22nd of march...but too lame to figure out the ticker thing again!>

I take 2 Benedryl and a glass of wine right after dinner/breakfast  when I fly to/from England. It's not too bad having a 7 hour flight but I hate the 10 hour Heathrow to Miami flight just too long - 2 Benedryl and wine allow me to sleep for about 4 hours and (usually) no after effects. Maybe try that - test it before you fly though.

jdm....I have tons of trouble with sleep. First falling asleep then staying asleep. I started using this and have had really great nights with no sleep interruptions or that groggy "hangover" feeling the next day. I love it!

I hate Ambien. I get all of the side effects also, hangover, dizzy, dry mouth, feel horrible the next day basically.

I get to sleep, just don't stay asleep. I drink Yogi bedtime tea and I sleep like a log for about 4-5 hours. Then I am up, I come to the forum :D and check e-mails and lately I just have a little more tea and I get to sleep for another 1-2 hours.

In STJ I wake up in the middle of the night and will stay awake the rest of the night unless I take 1/2 dose of Advil PM. I guess I am excited!
I can never sleep on a plane.

SO, test Ambien first, YES!

I also have trouble falling asleep & staying asleep. My doctor prescribed Lunesta (the ad on TV with the blue butterfly) @10mg. I think it's great! I fall asleep within 15 - 20 min. (without it, it can take a couple of hours for me to fall asleep!) and I stay asleep all night. You need to allow a good 7.5 - 8 hrs. for sleeping on these. When I wake up there's no hangover at all, and I've never heard stories of people sleep walking associated with Lunesta. 8)

Hmmm.... Ambien.... allow yourself at least eight hours of sleep. Take it about half an hour before your planned sleep time. Don't let it sit on your tongue, just swallow it right away. That way you'll avoid what some complain of as an after taste.

As for the Benadryl and wine, some people don't need the wine. Some do. Again allow yourself at least 6-8 hours, that way you don't feel the after effects when you wake up. You don't want to not be "rarin' to go to work" when you get there.

Try it out before you go to see how you respond to the meds. As a general rule alcohol and meds don't mix.

Caveat empertor!

That is what I take. I got it at Vitamin World. I am happy with it. But, from you post, I think you are planning on using it only occasionally. I plan on taking it regularly.

Bev, how long have you taken it??

I totally agree with the meds and alcohol not mixing and hope I didn't come across as suggesting this - somehow I don't think of Benedryl as "meds" :)

I take one about an hour before bedtime almost every night. Some nights if my back is hurting I'll take one of the Super Snooze and an Advil PM. ( I only take the two together on the weekend if I know I don't have to get up early..) Like I said I wake up rested and no grogginess from the Super Snooze. Also if you have to get up in the middle of the night you're not stumbling around like a zombie! My husband's a cop and they all take it when they work the 11p-7A shift. They take it in the morning so they can sleep during the daytime.
I don't think I'd take Benedryl and alcohol. Benedryl dries you up so much and the alcohol is going to dehydrate you also. So that sounds risky to me...
No offense Pia!
