Jost Van Dyke Trip Report - Day 2

Post by Jan&MikeVa »

Day 2 on Jost:

The room at Sea Crest has a full kitchen so we enjoyed coffee on the balcony at 7:30am watching this sleepy little island come to life. The dinghy people are all tucked away on their boats, not a one is stirring. The roosters are crowing and off in the distance, and we hear baby goats whining for Mama. Once in a while a vehicle zips by and picks someone up or drops someone off. It's a very comfortable feeling here, but it's dangerous. By this time tomorrow I will not want to leave. This island has sucked me in..........

So we get dressed (bathing suit & cover up) and head to White Bay for the day. We're hoping for a good breakfast at Soggy Dollar and it was not to disappoint. We got there before 9 and all the folks staying at the Sandcastle were just finishing up. Breakfast was a cinnamon bagel and fresh fruit (for me). Mike had the full breakfast, which added 2 eggs over easy and corn beef hash. Very very good. Oh, I forgot to mention that I started my day off with a Painkiller (herein referred to as PK - it got to be so many I can't type all that)!! Mike said it was okay because it had orange juice in it, yay for Mike.......he's so supportive! I love him.

Okay after breakfast another round of PK's (Mike's joining me now)   we are now relaxing in chairs on the beach. We walked the beach a couple of times. But after the 3rd or 4th PK I realized that I was sitting there totally stupefied (or as Lulu76 suggested, comatose). :? About every 20 minutes I go get in that beautiful water, splash around, and then go back to my chair and SIT. I couldn't read, I couldn't talk, I just sat there staring at the water. 8) 8) 8)

I crawled into a hammock a couple of times then headed back to the water.

At some point I had to talk to Mic the bartender to see what secret ingredient he was putting in my PK. He just smiles and laughs. So by 12:00 noon the place is hopping!! WOW, what a change from 9am. I have some before and during pics I'll post here.

For lunch we made our way down to Gertrude's and had the most fantastic hamburger! Yakked with the ladies there, a nice bunch. But like so many others they are worried because it hasn't been busy yet this January. Back at Soggy Dollar I climbed up into the shade for a couple of hours and people watched, and boat watched, and dingy watched!

A Pic of Mike & I enjoying the water..

The crowd at White Bay
<a href="http://s130.photobucket.com/albums/p267 ... edited.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p267 ... edited.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

This place was wide open! We decided to head out at some point that afternoon and ended up with another local in our jeep. However, I explained to him that he had to ride up the mountain with us first, no problem he just sat in the backseat and chatted about his cousins, uncles, aunts.........interesting guy we enjoyed our time with him. Would we consider doing this at home?? Sadly no way. The road up there is a hoot!!!! It's not dirt or gravel or even concrete; it's baby butt smooth grass!! And what a view looking down on White Bay. That was a lot of fun. We were going to go up later that night and look at the stars but it was cloudy and raining a bit. Oh well, next time!

So we're heading to Sydney's Peace & Love for lobster dinner and we've been told to make reservations. Well no phone at the room and my cell phone isn't working..........so we drive over to Little Harbor and stop along the waterfront. There are 2 guys outside working on a truck, one of which turns out to be Sydney. We write down on an old receipt what we want for dinner hand it to him and he says come back at 7:30. Off we go, what an interesting way to make dinner reservations.

A quick stop and walk through town to pick up some drinks & snacks. I didn't find the prices to be too high. We laughed at a sign on the bar at Corsairs. It read something like this: Back at 4:30, no maybe 5:30. For sure by 6:30! If you want dinner please write your name down in this book & what you'd like to eat. Come back at 7:30 it'll be ready for you. That was a good one! :P :P

A quick shower and fresh clothes and we're off to Sydney's. The honor bar system is interesting; our first encounter. I mixed painkillers for us, but forget it........they were terrible. I switched to wine & Mike to beer, no mixing involved! The couple that was staying next door to us showed up to eat & we invited them to join us. The couple is from the Southern part of England and we had some wonderful conversation! It was a delightful evening. Oh, I had the lobster (which was steamed not grilled rated OK), Mike had some kind of fresh fish which he raved over. Plenty of sides of cole slaw, potato salad, & rice were all good. After dinner the guys took a look at the lobster traps and also the tanks where they store them. Another fun evening chatting with new friends and the locals at Sydney's. But they were ready for us all to leave; after all it's 9:00pm.......time for bed!

We got back to the room & decided to head over to Foxy's for a nightcap. Tonight is our last night on vacation and we're a little reluctant to end the day. :( :( Don't we all know that feeling! We sat at the bar with only a couple of other people; tonight is very slow there. We laughed when 2 couples showed up, dressed to the max (well for cruisers) looking for the live band. The poor guys at Foxy's were trying to explain to these folks that nothing was going on. Come back tomorrow night he told them; we have a barbecue and good music. They were so disappointed I felt bad for them. He told them they could dance right there and have a good time. He'd stay open till they quit drinking. But they headed back to the boat I guess.

We leave tomorrow, but I'm packing tonight. Mike PROMISED all the time at White Bay we can squeeze in before the noon ferry. I fall asleep to the breaking waves over at White Bay. NO! I can't hear them for real, just in my mind............only 12 more hours......wah :(

I know this has been detailed but I am hoping to convey the sense of atmosphere on Jost. We've only been for day trips and I am so glad we got the opportunity to stay over this trip.

More on our travel day, breakfast with the chicken & cat, and my last PK at Soggy Dollar.

Sad as it is to go Jan........you will be back and maybe even stay a bit longer.
I love the early mornings on Jost.
Ivan and Darline and Charlene think it funny but it is so peaceful.
I do my walk into town and then back and past Seddy's and up that big hill.

I can not wait to get back.....Thank you for letting us come with you in your trip....you really made me feel like I was there

Mic and his painkillers are the most dangerous thing in the island for me!! Various people kept bringing them to me as I floated in a virtually empty White Bay and I didn't realize that I could no longer walk until I tried to get out of the water. I'm sure I looked like an idiot, but our day on Jost is at the top of my best day ever list!!

Thanks so much for transporting me back there with your report!
