Advice for Concordia tents
Advice for Concordia tents
We will be staying in the tents at Concordia in April (2 adults, 2 teen/tween boys). I am looking for advice from folks who have stayed there. I know that there is a small kitchen with a propane stove, but will we also have access to a common area, say with a grill (charcoal or gas)? Are linens provided? Do you recommend bringing beach towels from home? Are there board games that can be borrowed or should we pack those? I hear that there is a small restaurant that is open on some nights. Any feedback on that? I am looking for any advice that you think would be helpful. Thanks in advance!
You have to bring beach towels as they don't provide them for you--they do have linens though (bath towels, sheets, etc)
there are small charcoal grills up on the walkways for use by whoever wants to use them--be careful of the electric coolers--i usually turn mine to really cold for about an hour or so after we arrive , then turn it back to about the second level--any fresh vegies should be kept in the side basket--the coolers have a tendency to freeze up --
the cafe should be open for dinners when you are there--
there is also a small store there that does coffee in the mornings and has staples and is reasonably priced.
the office has some games (scrabble, backgammon, clue, and some others if i remember correctly) that can be borrowed, there is also a swap shelf--it almost always has peanut butter and leftover bug repellent and sunscreen and a few canned/packaged items.
It is a very special place you and your kids are going to love it.--we stay there often. pm me if you have any other questions!

< leaving on the 22nd of march...but too lame to figure out the ticker thing again!>
Thanks! I can't imagine cooking much on a propane stove (boil water for tea, maybe), but it might be nice to bbq some burgers one night. We are really looking forward to Concordia and are beginning to think through the things we want to do (besides loaf on the beach, snorkel and take a hike or two....although that will probably be the bulk of our trip!)

Concordia
Concordia is great. My husband and I stayed there in January after spending years going to Maho. It was a nice but not overwhelming upgrade. The propane stove is ok for cooking. It has only 2 burners, of course, but we cooked all of our breakfasts and 2 dinners (out of 5) there (make sure you shop in Cruz Bay before driving up--the Dolphin Market is very good) We usually pack our lunch or visit Miss Lucy's on Friis Bay. The dining room at Concordia has very good food, but the menu is a little limited and it doesn't seem to change, except for the night's fish dish. I wouldn't try using the charcoal grills unless the wind has died down. Shipwreck Landing has excellent food too.
Definitely recommended: hiking the Ram Head Trail from Salt Pond Bay and driving in to Lameshur Bay and hiking the trail up from there to the Reef Bay Trail.
Have fun in Paradise!

I found the cooktop, which is 2 burners inset on the counter, quite easy to cook upon and didn't feel limited in what I made while there. For Beach towels, I chose to do the "pay it forward" thing and bought STJ beach towels at the Concordia store and then just added them to my linen drop at the end of the trip for someone elses use. Extra items are at the reg desk. The grills seem easy enough, too, and you could pick one in a less windy spot if any concern. Try to get a tent, assuming there is still good avail, just above the tents numbered 13&14, the wind is strong enough there that it should drive away any mosquitoes - very important.
If you do the Rams Head hike, start early in the morning, the heat by midday can feel brutal up there.
The cafe is wonderful, food quite good and you will love the view, the views are everywhere there and that's what I would miss most if I ever stay anywhere else. Enjoy!

Concordia is absolutely beautiful! We stayed in one of the tents for a week two years ago with our 2 & 5 yr old sons. All of the above advice is great and the biggest piece of advice that I can give you is to bring ear plugs for all of you. If it is windy at night (which is lovely and keeps the bugs away) the tent walls can get pretty loud as they flap in the wind - if you have ear plugs to block out some of the sound, you'll sleep great and enjoy the cooling breeze!
