Where to retire?

I have to agree with you Ron. Being a Texas gal, I can't imagine having a permanent residence that is not in the state. That being said, much of Texas is no-where-ville and I'd die of bordom. But I always tell my husband that I could retire in Austin. My son lives there and he'll never move away.Ron in South Texas wrote:Austin, TX...great city, great restaurants, great music, great weather...there's a pretty good university there, too.
Funny story...The defensive coordinator for UT, Will Muschamp, has been mentioned for several head caching positions. His wife ans family said go ahead and take a head job somewhere else, but we're not leaving Austin. You can go by yourself.
I've heard great things about Costa Rica, but my girlfrind's daughter went there last summer for a Spanish class and fell and had to have quite a few stiches in her knee. By the time she got home, it was so infected she almost lost her leg. It was not a coincidence. There was all kinds of rocks and debris left in the wound. I would certainly have concerns about the health care system.
I'd die from liver failure on Maho if I lived on STJ.

Depending on the economy and my shoe fetish, we're 5 - 20 years from retirement.
I think we've decided to find somewhere without a killer winter, a couple of hours from the ocean and great golfing.
We've never been, but South Carolina is near the top of the list. We lived in Tennessee and loved it there, but not close enough to the ocean.

I'm with Pete. Good thing, since we're married. I really like the Midwest and think I'd have a hard time leaving here even though I would appreciate warmer weather. I love this lake that we live on, too.
A smaller house would be nice though, once the four kids are out of here (in just a couple of years). The little cottage next door looks good. Sell this house (good luck) and build a cute 3 bedroom home next door.

I want to stay right here near the Blue Ridge Mountains. We are 3 1/2 hours from the ocean, we can see the mountains from our house, we've got four seasons, we like the east coast and the cost of living is relatively cheap. Both of our families are here. Our son and his wife are expecting their first child and they live near us. i want to be near my grandchild.
We can get to St John relatively easy too!

We will probably downsize and buy a small condo around here. Then be on an Island for three or four months a year probably not St John though, cost prohibitive. We were just looking this weekend at islands out there. Lots to choose from maybe we will do a different one each year until we find a keeper.
Since coming to the USVI and BVI we have decided that
when the time comes we are going to sell up an sail around the world.
We have booked the 1st set of lessons for the summer
so we are on our way.
Mike at "Sailview" you can take some credit for this as you exploded some myths we had about this kind of life and since meeting you we have explored further and found it is not impossible like we thought
