We slept in this morning later than I ever do at home or on vacation I'm up with the sun but it felt so good to sleep in. We are staying at the" River Palace" what a great hotel we headed down for breakfast that was included in our rate thinking it was going to be the pastry and coffee type of thing. But to our surprise it was a full buffet with eggs , meats, fruit, and pastry. We filled up our bellies checked with the front desk about our luggage they said they would check with the air lines. So we headed out, this hotel is only 2 blocks from Plaza del popolo and a block from the subway station. We took the subway to the Vatican. We wanted to be here early but that didn't happen. We got into line for the museum but were told it was a 3 hour wait the hawkers want us to book a tour with them I walked up and the line had to be close to mile long. So we decided to do St Peter's first. Walked in to the square in front of it I was awe struck by the size of the place and all the statues.

We got into line to go in had to go through metal detectors. I can't put it into words how big this place is but 60,000 can attend mass inside of the church The wooden canopy above the alter is 7 stories high. We walked around in awe with all that there is to see in here almost in sensory over load.

We headed over to the line to climb the dome we paid 7 euro to take the elevator up half way so we only had to climb 320 steps to get to the top. These steps aren't made for someone over 6 ft in places I had to turn my shoulders aide ways to fit through. But the view when we got out of the cupola made it all worth it.
Half way up

After getting down and collecting or back packs from the bag check we headed over to the Vatican museum it was about 3 in the afternoon we walked right in they quit allowing entry at 4:30 There are 4 miles of hallways line with art all the ceilings are painted to get to the Sistine Chapel

We grabbed a piece of pizza and a glass of wine it was all we had to eat since breakfast. On the way back we had our first gelato . It was after 7 by the time we got back to the hotel checked with the front desk about our luggage they told us it was found but didn't have an ETA on when it would be delivered. So we went to the hotel bar and had a drink by the time we were done and headed to the room our luggage was there. Went up and unpacked and called it a night.

I haven't been to Italy but my husband has and it is on our wish list for the future when our little boy is older.
While much smaller and certainly less grand, I remember being in awe when visitng churches in Germany.
The Vactican must have been mind-blowing.
This may be a stupid question but was it cold? I like the idea of going in the winter solely because I have crowd issues.
