Eddie Bauer Summer Catalog
Eddie Bauer Summer Catalog
I received one of those "summer preview" catalogs in the mail last month and noticed that all of the outdoor shots have islands in the background. I was thinking how not many places you can see islands in the background besides the Virgin Islands. So the other night I was looking closer and sure enough I started to notice the familiar islands in the background that you see from St. John. Also on one page I see a lady leaning against a bar and I am almost 100% sure its Joe's Rum Hut!
I thought maybe I was going crazy (or just dreaming about our return trip later this year) but I showed my husband and he agreed that's what it looks like.

I just heard on the radio this morning that Eddie Bauer is laying off a bunch of people. I’m kind of surprised they spent that kind of money on a photo shoot in an economy like this. I mean I’m no more or less likely to purchase a swimming suit based on what is in the background in the catalog.

I have been doing a lot of work on the periphery of the "fashion world" and also have an old friend who does photo styling, etc. for catalog shoots. This kind of stuff was probably planned way in advance and budgeted for over a year ago. The shoot I would bet was done last fall. None of these retailers (no one really, right?) was planning on the abruptness of this slowdown. It will be interesting to see if catalogs, etc. coming out a year from now reflect the current economics conditions. I read a lot of business news and it does seem inevitable that we are going to lose a lot clothing companies (and their smaller suppliers you have never heard of) to bankruptcy (or they will simply close their doors) - it has already started and it will be swift as many of them live season to season and many retailers were highly leveraged. One bad stretch and that is it for many of them - we have friends who were here for 18 years, just made the move to Milan with their studio, and now - less than 9 months later, have already closed it up! They simply couldn't sell their collection.Teresa_Rae wrote:I just heard on the radio this morning that Eddie Bauer is laying off a bunch of people.
