4th of July

Post by cwaver »

Hi all, I'm planning a trip to Stj this summer. Coming home 7/4. I read some stuff about avoiding travelling on that day. Why?

The problem with coming home July 4th is the annual 4th of July parade. Most of downtown will be blocked off. You may find it hard to get to the ferry in a timely fashion. I’m not saying you can’t do it, but it may not be easy. I believe the Westin has their own ferry if you are planning on staying there. Otherwise, you could call the company you are renting your car from and ask them their opinion.

You may also experience difficulty on STT getting taxis etc.

IMHO -- to be blunt -- you're pretty much screwed the entire day. It's not about the parade itself but all the activity leading up to it and afterwards.

Great question - I am actaully planning on heading home on July 4th as well and was wondering about it.

I did contact the rental agent for the place I am staying to see if they would recommend I leave a day early or stay a day longer (my preference of course!). They replied that they didn't think leaving on the fourth would be that big of a problem.

What do you all think about the car ferry on the 4th? Same issues?

Go early a.m. and you won't have a problem. In fact during carnival day the schedule for ferries is almost every 20 to 30 minutes. They go back and forth to bring the folks travelling from STT.

The roads are closed from about 9am on so returning cars after that can be difficult depending where you rent.
Taxi's will pick up/drop off at the maintenance parking lot next to Mongoose Junction (if you are on North Shore Road) as North Shore is closed at the top of the hill at the head of the Lindt Point Trail.
Trying to walk through town with luggage is no fun due to crowds after about 10:30am. You should be fine if you plan on being on the 9am ferry - which you should be for a noon flight.
Hope this helps.
