For those that care- My backstage BHTM and DMB story

Post by Xislandgirl »

I am trying to remember the year it all happened but I can not remember for the life of me. Some time in the early to mid 90's. This was before DMB became as huge as they are now. My friend and I went to Lupo's in Providence to see Ugly Americans, BHTM, and Dave Matthews. It was insanely crowded and I am not a crowd person so I was standing way in the back and started chatting to this guy who headed the road crew for BHTM. He offered to take me backstage to hang out where it was less crowded, so I went and hung out with all the crew and the other bands while DMB was on stage. After the show the club was clearing out and I was going to go back out to find my friend and one of the crew told me to just go on stage and I could see the whole club that way, she saw me and came backstage and we all hung out while they were loading up. They were driving to Boston that night but would be in New Haven 2 nights later and offered us tickets and backstage passes.

We met them a few hours before the show and had dinner and then went to the show and hung out in the green room. Dave himself was hanging out with us, it was super cool. After the show we all went back to the hotel to have some drinks and they soon realized that the Blue laws in CT prohibit booze sales on Sunday and by that time it was after midnight and all the bars had closed. They knew that there was booze on the bus but Dave was on the bus and they didn't think he would give any up, but my friend and I were sure we could get it so we got the key from one of the crew and marched on to the tour bus and started going through cabinets and the fridge. Dave came out of the bedroom area and asked us what we were doing and we told him. He laughed and said that the crew had set us up, they knew that he would not give up any of the booze, but he would show them, and loaded us up with beer and whiskey.
When we got back to the hotel room they were all stunned. We had a blast and partied with them, playing cards all night.
It was a really fun time, the guys were really great, and we got to see a lot of what goes into a show like that.

On a related note:
One of the people that we really liked was the lead singer for Ugly American's, Bobby. He was from Austin and many years later dated and lived with Sandra Bullock (before Jesse James) My friend's brother moved to Austin and is in a band named Reckless Kelly. He met Bobby and when we found out about it, we sent some pictures that we had taken that night and he remembered us.

That is a great story! I love DMB, if it had been me, I think I would have been too starstruck to even speak! Sounds like you had a great time and wow! what great memories! Thanks for telling the story.

I probably should have been but I had no idea who he was. It was way before he was popular. We went because we wanted to see Big Head Todd.

Very cool. Right now the Beautiful World and Sister Sweetly rotation is cranking on iTunes. Tomorrow I will wear my black Reckless Kelly t-shirt.
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

Glad to know that people out there know Reckless. I think they are awesome. Jay Nazz is a great guy!

I still think about the sewerage incident when I hear DMB

They do have a nifty concert taped in New York out on Bluray that is stunning.

Thanks for that great story! I am a huge DMB fan so to be on the STJ forum and read about Dave...another reason to love this forum. Oh how I wish I was in Charlottesville in the early 90s to meet the guys before they hit it so big. The last show we went to was in June, a week or so before Leroi was in the atv accident-what a tragedy.

Thanks again for the tidbit, it jump started my day.

That's a cool story. I love DM.

I was living in Ireland when U2 was brand-new and everyone I knew had a Bono story. Not me; instead I had this weird old "Irish cabaret" star named "Phil the Fluter" pestering me for a date.
