Pia, regardless 13% or 22% I think it is pretty clear he is the most unpopular president in modern times. That is not up for dispute. Worse than Nixon at the height of watergate. That's sayin' something.

my apologies for a lame attempt at levity, however soxfan, your comments were more than a bit insulting.soxfan22 wrote:And quite honestly, I'm sick of this too. If you have something to add, please spare us the condescending, holier than thou preamble about how you "weren't going to get sucked in". Lets be adults, can we? And not just you Loria, this seems to be a popular tactic among some lefty's here.loria wrote:OH, I swore that i would not get drawn back in. i really did....but i am sort of like a mosquito and a bug light--i will probably get zapped....
I am not holier than though and have never professed to be.
and i am a 'lefty' for whatever that means and a (much older) adult,
so maybe , if you could take a small bit of advice from an older lefty ?
be a bit more considered in your opinions

SJfromNJ...I've mentioned this other places on this forum, but I really think you would like the movie "Man on Wire." While it is about Philippe Petite's wire walk between the twin towers in 1974, it really is a tribute to the towers themselves.
He actually started planning the walk before the towers were completed. The movie has extensive footage of the towers being built. They are co-stars in a pretty interesting movie.

Another documentary that we liked was, "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill." It's a love story, of sorts.SJfromNJ wrote:Saw it many times Pete. I do not watch many Hollywood films. Documentaries mostly and some foreign stuff is more to my liking.
Do you have any recommendations?

Agreed that there is no need to call Bush names or even to get in a pissing contest here about the Bush record. Lets just say it has been disappointing for the majority. He did the best HE could. Perhaps if he was perceived as just a little bit more successful, Obama probably would not have been elected.
But I suspect that more than failed policy or the decisions made, the thing that fries a lot of people’s bacon about Bush is the WAY stuff was done by the Bush team.
For example:
> it’s a whisper campaign against John McCain about his adopted daughter in the South Carolina primary;
> it’s being less than forthright about the gaps in the intelligence and the reliability of sources, using ambiguous information to tie Al Qaeda to Iraq, and frequently presenting worst case scenarios as fact in the build up to the Iraq War;
> it’s the ethics of using English words in ways precisely contrary to their meaning (cutting air pollution regs and calling it the “Blue Skies Initiative” - I’m surprised that they didn’t call those shoes thrown at Bush last month “Victory Shoes”);
> it’s Swift Boating John Kerry;
> it’s stifling or dismissing the dissent of those inside and outside the administration who were critical of the war planning;
> it’s the hubris of “Mission Accomplished”;
> it’s stonewalling the 9/11 Commission
A lot of folks “misunderestimate” Bush in they way they perfected the Clinton techniques of using deceptive language and political campaign spin techniques in their day to day operations. Combine that with their unrivaled discipline for “staying on message” and you have a powerful way to communicate, because a lot of people do not have good bullsh*t detectors, or are too lazy to peel back the onion.
Policy failures are a fact of life. I hope that our new President can admit mistakes and be willing to change course in a timely fashion; that he doesn’t let loyalty get in the way of accountability; that he keeps people around him that will tell him when the Emperor has no clothes on; that he makes his case for policy decisions in a reasonable and persuasive fashion, but doesn’t blow too much smoke up our ass.
P.S. Linne: once again, I apologize for using too many metaphors or "figures of speech". I always chuckle when I picture someone for whom English is a second language reads some of my posts!
