With regard to Cuba...I heard that he was wanting to "close down the base"...could that be true? Wow! No more fake "blimps" flying over Key West spying on Cuba? My grandfather was the head engineer at the silver mine in Matahombre and that place was doing great back then. Bring it back! Let's move on.

Can you explain what you think he meant by this? That one kinda confused me a bit.

I'll take a stab...

First and foremost, the United States stands for freedom and liberty (see new york harbor). Many are of the opinion that in order to enjoy the safety we have experienced since 9-11, we have compromised many of our civil liberties through policies such as The Patriot Act, NSA wiretapping, Guantanamo Bay, etc...Obama was saying (my interpretation) was that we will no long sacrifice our freedoms and liberties through these policies in order to secure our safety.

Not judging his thought, just my two cents on what he meant.

I think what he meant was that if you shread the Constitution in the pursuit of safety you have sacrificed that which you are fighting for to begin with. That the safety/ideals issue is not a zero sum game. For one to prevail the other does not have to be sacrificed. That the pursuit of safety no matter the cost to our individual and collective rights is not an acceptable arrangement.

After 9/11, Bush had an approval rating of over 70%. My impression is that we, as a country, tried to put partisan politics aside and rally behind our President.

Is it possible that Bush had a high approval rating because people were scared? We united a bit against "them" for a moment. But once everything appeared safe again . . . the approval rating went down.

McCain didn't distance himself from Bush because he felt Bush was doing a bad job. It doesn't take a genius to see that because Bush had such a low approval rating McCain had to appear different than Bush.

If Bush did such a horrible job why is Obama coming center? Could it be that Obama has realized that Bush knew what he was doing?? So far, I don't see much change. But . . . that is something I am grateful for. If I would have known that he was going to run his presidency from the center I would have voted for him.

George Bush has said a farewell to the nation but his critics haven’t said farewell to him.

Ask yourself what kind of president could be vilified like this?

“Third rate…a coarse, vulgar joker…a liar…a buffoon…a tyrant…the most dishonest politician that ever disgraced an office…intoxicated with the maddening cup of power…every act filled with deception…without merit of any kind…a tyranny utterly regardless of all moral considerations, trampling under foot all the guarantees of a written Constitution…to be pitied …[his cabinet is] by far the weakest that has ever been called to administer the Government of the United States…trying with all his might to understand strategy, naval warfare, big guns, the movements of troops, military maps, reconnaissances, occupations, interior and exterior lines, and all the technical details of the art of slaying…”

Actually, those were criticisms of Abraham Lincoln when he was president.

You may be in Denmark, and we may be over here,( I believe if you you look at a map we'd be on the left somewhere-

), but we're all also looking forward to some sort of new beginning.
Unless I'm mistaken, we all have the freedom & liberty to enjoy STJ evenly, and I personally can't wait to do so again! Soon!

I think some HERE have been made hyper-sensitive to ANY criticism of Bush (last straw kind of thing) because in the past few weeks the press and blogs have had a field day reflecting on the legacy of the Bush administration and indeed, a lot of analyses have been quite harsh, raking him over the coals for a lot of the stuff that went wrong on his watch as well as they way they did things, and maybe not giving enough credit for the successes. They say that journalism provides the first draft of history. If so, maybe he has nowhere to go but up in the eyes of his detractors.

That said, my intent is NOT to invite competing lists of accomplishments and failures here. At this point, that's ANOTHER no-win game.

But there is one area where President Bush’s legacy will be strong and admirable – “Most Brush Cleared”
Just kidding! The thing he should get MAJOR props for is the way he is leaving office. It is to be admired and emulated. We couldn’t afford to fumble this handoff and he did his part to make sure that didn’t happen. Good for him and good for us. Betcha even he would say “time to move on” and "let's give the new guy a chance".
