I know many folks like to mail boxes down in advance (myself included on occasion) and I know that some folks have had MAJOR issues when doing so.
Turns out we're not going crazy that in fact the problem is real and according the the USPS Inspector General it's not necessarily a problem in the VI but in PR.
So if you're interested read on...
VI POSTAL COMPLAINTS SAID TO BE VALID
The US Postal Service Office of the Inspector General has reported that complaints by Virgin Islands postal customers about deplorable service have proved valid.
The inspector general's office began an audit of postal services in the islands at the request of Delegate Christensen earlier this year.
In a preliminary October report, the Inspector General reported that "every class of mail" processed through Puerto Rico demonstrated delays.
The Inspector General found problems with the transportation of mail by commercial air and by barge to include FedEx deliveries, with first class mail which arrived an average of two days late and surface mail which arrived seven days late.
Once the mail got to the Virgin Islands, it was found that it moved efficiently and quickly. The Inspector General made several recommendations to include: decreasing the number of times mail is sorted in San Juan, maximizing the barge capacity for package mail to the Virgin Islands from San Juan, requesting that Customs provide a daily reconciliation of mail and providing for the cancellation of inter-island mail.
A final report is expected shortly.

SInce I am frequent visitor and care about the island I will occasional write to express concerns on issues regarding the environment, ferry service, issues that affect tourism etc.
She and her staff are wonderful and very responsive.
