If you haven't picked where to stay yet, definitely shop around. From all I've heard/read LV is hurting in this economy. I know I receive emails almost every day from different resorts w/"deals" to visit.
Non gambling wise-Bellagio has a nice art museum-rotating displays, costs something, but I can't remember how much. Also I really like the Chihuly (sp?)glass in Bellagio and their beautiful floral display area which is free. Downtown is fun for the atmosphere

Have fun-it's really not all about the gambling!

Xgirl,
Wherever you stay, you have to try the "twenty dollar trick" When you check in have a twenty folded under your credit card. As you hand it to the clerk, as if there are any upgrades. They slyly pocket the money ( cameras are watching). I did it at Bally's check-in at the airport. The clerk actually showed me pictures of rooms to choose from. I got a huge suite with a wall of windows overlooking Paris, sunken tub, etc. There is a whole thread on this at fatwallet travel forum. Hubby wouldn't try it but I went for it..very cool the upgrades people get for no extra cost but the twenty are amazing.

Cocosmom,
That is very true. There also are several hotels/resorts that offer the same deal to concierge upgrade for a true $20. We've paid this upfront before at some websites, walked in and got a great upgrade, plus had use of the concierge services such as early check in, easy check out, ideas on things to do, free snacks, fruit, coffee, just to name a few.
Also, if you have points...use them to upgrade at major brand hotels such as Hyatt, Marriott (JW Marriott is very cool...got the high roller 2000 sq. ft. place there once for $79/nt...usually goes for $975). No gambling required. If you have any friends or relatives that work for a major resort, it doesn't hurt to ask for a friends and family rate. It's no shirt off their back and I've been told there really is no limits for them. Most of our friends or family have been dissappointed that we didn't ask them. It wasn't comfortable for us.
Basic line is it never hurts to ask. Las Vegas is in a bit of a hurt right now with not as many companies booking conventions. There are some good deals!

Thanks for all the tips. We just booked Bally's because the deal was too good to pass up. Airfare and 3 night stay for under $600 total for both of us.
I am going to try the $20 trick, I figure it can't hurt to ask.
We are going to be silly tourists, eat too much, drink too much, shop too much, and doas many silly things as we can. Of course, I will not be able to tell any of you about it, because you know........

When you stay at Ballys, the better "view" suites were older. I decided I wanted the strip/Paris view with older furnishings over the newly renovated (2007) rooms in the back section of the hotel. Maybe someone here can tell you if it is the North or South building that faces the strip..I am directionally challenged. The clerk showed me pictures of both & I remembered the travel forum said not to stay in the back building ( south?) due to no view.
