So funny to see the Christmas tree with the chicken, and your own tree is cute, mrscaptainjay.

Thank you for the pictures, Jaysedee. It’s so interesting to see so many different ornaments people have. It’s different from DK. And I wonder. Does everybody have a mantel?? There are so many pics with decorations on the mantel.

Linne,

I live in Central Pennsylvania and fire places (with mantels) are common.

Our house was built in the early 1920s and there is a fire place in the living room and one in the kitchen, which is not common for the age of the house.

Nearly every new home I see has at least one. In my area, gas-burning fire places are most popular in the new homes.

Unless the style is modern, you would find a mantel over every fire place.

Thank you for answering my question PA girl.

From your answer I can understand that it's common in USA to have an open fireplace in the houses.

In DK we of course also can see open fire places but today it's much more common to have a woodburning stove, because you use it more for heating than for pleasure. We have had an open fire place too (with a little mantel), but for some years ago we got doors on.

You can find many, many different models of woodburning stoves, and it's very seldom that you build a house today with an open fireplace.

How common is woodburning stoves in USA?

Linne,

In Central PA, wood burning stoves are very common.

Growing up I knew many families that used wood stoves as their only source of heat.

Wood pellet burners are also popular. These stoves are similar to traditional wood stoves but burn wood chips and other by-products that are compressed into little nuggets.

The hardwood industry is veyr strong where I live and recycling sawdust, wood chips and other manufacturing by-products is a growing business in Central PA.

Hi again PA girl.

We also use stoves where you can use different sorts of materials. But then you normally don't have it in your rooms like a part of the furniture.

Where do people in PA place their stoves?

Basements are a common location for wood stoves.

Fireplace inserts that burn pellets are becoming more popular http://www.harmanstoves.com/callouts.asp?id=18

as are these types of woodburners - http://www.harmanstoves.com/callouts.asp?id=2

It is common to see these types of stoves in living rooms and family rooms. Our neighbors have one in their kitchen. It is enameled and decorative as well as functional.

I find it so interesting to learn about customs in other countries and to see that even though we have a global world every country can have a special character and taste.

Your stoves are not similar the Danish stoves, but the function seems to be the same.

If you like to see a Danish wood burner you can see some models here:

We are planning to build a bigger cottage in Boennerup, where we have a very little and simple cottage now. We intend to save energy and the heating will come from the heat in the earth and from a wood burner. We have already a lot of wood, because we have cut many big trees down. So during some years the investment will be paid with the saved energy, and we feel that we are helping the environment :) .

I think Obama will nod approvingly :D
