Gromits Adventures in Happy LAnd - Epilogue + Do's & Don

Gromit's Adventures in Happy Land: Epilogue -- Otherwise known as Day 8

(Again, REALLY long but HOPEFULLY worth it!)

Location: Mayan Sky (Upper Carolina) Coral Bay Gromit's Cast of characters:

Gromit: ME!! Mr. Gromit: Hubby MIL: Mother in law (Newbie) FIL: Father in law (Newbie)

Sunday December 14 (Day 8 - travel day): Travel Day, Walk of Woe, Candy for the Kids, Nasty Dads and Lessons Learned.

This day of all days is probably the most depressing of any trip. My only saving grace was the fact that I already had our return trip planned and it is just 6 months away. To me, this is the only true remedy for the "walk of woe" - knowing that you'll be back.

Knowing that there's some work involved in cleaning up and cleaning ourselves out of the villa I packed the night before.

Imagine my surprise when no one offered to clean out the fridge, clean up etc??

Tip! If you're traveling with companions and don't want to do all the work yourself, make a point to ask what others will be doing to help you or assign a task to folks so that they can also pitch in. NEVER assume that someone will recognize that something needs to be done and will "pitch in" voluntarily.

MIL spent the morning leisurely packing and FIL watched TV while I cleaned out the fridge, gathered towels, cleaned out the dishwasher, washed any dirty dishes and gathered trash.

At 10 am hubby loaded up the vehicle and we headed down to Domino to gas up. Considering what a pain Cruz Bay can be especially with the roundabout construction I figured we'd be better off gassing up on Coral bay than dealing with all that. This worked out pretty well. Just make sure the guy really tops you off.

We also swung by the garbage cans and dropped off the extra garbage.

Dropped luggage off at the ferry dock and then FIL and I dropped off the Jeeps at STJ car rental. Once again this was a flawless rental and I took a moment to book our Jeep rental for June. Hey, might as well kill two birds with one stone! I cannot say enough good things about STJ Car rental. I've been renting from these folks for over a decade.

FIL and I walked back to the ferry dock and met up with Hubby and MIL.

MIL decided that now was the opportunity to buy grandma (her mother) a gift. Par for the course.

I immediately suggested STJ Spice (in hopes of saving myself time and frustration) but she said that she'd already looked there on their visit the other day and didn't see anything. She had no idea what she wanted other than "no jewelry" so off I went into Wharfside village to find something that said "St. John" on it that wasn't "tacky" in 15 minutes or less. Okeedokeee.

I finally took her to "Into the Blue" and she seemed as if she could find what she wanted there so having done my duty, I headed back to FIL and hubby at the dock.

Here we ran into our Dutch friends from the other night at Miss Lucy's. Not sure if they were smiling or cringing at the sight of us but we went over and said "Hi," so as not to be rude.

Turned out this was their first trip to STJ and, despite the abuse we piled onto them at Miss Lucy's, they said they would be back.

Since I am the anal retentive type when it comes to not missing planes and getting through security, we decided to take the 11:15 from Cruz bay. We boarded the ferry to Downtown and ended up stopping at Red Hook first (the other ferry wasn't operating).

After we off loaded some folks we headed to downtown. As usual the taxis were waiting.

We opted to just go ahead and head straight for the airport. But in future I will probably plan on asking the taxi driver to hold onto luggage while we wander around downtown for a bit.

It was only 12 noon and our flight didn't leave until 3:30 so we could have easily killed an hour and a half wandering around and picking up a few last minute items/gifts.

Once we arrived at the airport we did what all season STJ travelers do: Got a porter. The lines weren't all that bad but I hate having to haul my luggage all over Cyril E. King airport.

The porter essentially bumps you to the front of the line, helps you get your boarding passes, fudges you through any "overweight" baggage issues and gets you the paperwork to fill out before you get to customs/security. They then wait for you while you clear customs and drops off your bags at the screening checkpoint. All while everyone else is fumbling and trying to negotiate all of the above.

Sure if you only do carry on only, none of this is really an issue but as long as I am ME and will check every last ounce that I can without paying extra, I will have bags. And if you have bags this is the best way to go. Honestly, it's the best $20 I spend during the entire vacation.

My IL's weren't thrilled at first about getting a porter since it doesn't look like it would be a pain but then they watched in awe as we proceeded through all these steps effortlessly. I know there is controversy about the porters all I can say is, pay the $20 and do it too. Nuff said.

We proceeded to the airport waiting area and I can't remember seeing so many people passed out on the chairs. Lightweights.

We grabbed lunch from the little cafeteria. IL's sat at the bar, we sat in the waiting area. The cafeteria is improved IMHO. They have a local cuisine option - obviously homemade dishes--and then the usual burgers, fries, chicken fingers etc. The cashier ladies are also eager to "upsell" these days as well asking if you want to get cookies, chips etc. But they do it with a smile and I don't mind so much.

While eating my lunch a family came in and sat down behind hubby and me. Four kids (ages ranging from 10 to 5 years old), a mom, dad and mom's BFF.

In true Gromit fashion, I struck up a conversation with the Mom, the BFF and the kids (who were beyond adorable). Turns out the family was from Philly and the Mom worked for USAIR. They were flying standby back to Philly and this was their first visit to STT.

The dad was just wandering all over the place while Mom and her BFF watched over the kids.

I'll have to be honest and say that observing this family it was clear that they could never have afforded to fly here if Mom wasn't able to score free tickets. But they had made the best of it, stayed in two rooms at Bolongo Bay, didn't rent a car and ate cheap.

Mom had even bagged lunches and snacks for the kids in gallon size zip lock bags. The kids eyed my burger and fries a bit jealously but they really did try to hide it. They were too sweet and the Mom was genuinely impressed by STT. This trip was obviously a big deal for them and she said she had never taken a real vacation before.

After some chatting I decided to head to the airport gift shop to pick up some reading material for the journey ahead.

At the check out counter I spotted the M&M's and picked up four bags (2 peanut & 2 regular). When I returned to my seat in the waiting area, I leaned forward and quietly said to the Mom, "Hey, I picked up some nags of M&M's for the kids - would you mind if I gave them to them?"

She smiled broadly and said, "Sure! That was so nice of you!!"

So I called the kids over and told them I didn't know which they liked but they would have to share with each other. They all politely said "Thank You," and were clearly thrilled.

Just as the oldest girl sat back in her chair with a bag of peanut M&M's the dad appears behind her and literally snatches the bag of peanut M&M's out of her hand.

A few stray M&M's land in her lap and she looks at me, eye's wide as if someone has slapped her.

The father says, "Gimme those." Literally snatches the candy out of his daughter's hands because he wanted them.

I will never forget the look on that little girls face as long as I live. I could tell that she wanted to protest and cry but there was also this look of resignation on her face and she knew she couldn't say anything.

I was in shock and the mother just turned to one of the other kids and told them to share theirs with their sister.

I just didn't know what to do or say. So finally I said jokingly "Well, I hope you like them although they were intended for the kids."

The Dad said, "Well I have to check them out don't I? they could be poisoned," as he stuffed the candy greedily into his mouth. Considering this A-Holes behavior at this point I wished that they were.

Clearly there was more going on in this family dynamic that I could not solve with a bag of candy. After a bit, our respective flights were called and we exchanged hugs with the IL's and boarded the plane.

The flight to ATL was packed and generally unpleasant. But the second leg/flight to Dulles was only half full. Hubby and I ended up with rows to ourselves and we grabbed some Z's on the way home. All in all it had been a good trip and much needed break from the real world.

Would I invite the in-laws again? I think so. I truly think they had a good time and enjoyed the island. I wouldn't mind splitting the bill on a villa, but would generally leave them to do their own thing and we would do ours. I would also do the following.... (this list may help others as well)

Lessons Learned, Do's & Don'ts:

1.Get separate checks for all meals. No matter what anyone says, someone always feels like their getting the short end of the stick even if you can divide it to the penny.

2.Lots of restaurants on island are closed Monday nights so plan your dining accordingly.

3.A day trip to Jost via ferry is a lot of fun, but 5 - 6 hours on Jost still feels rushed and at $60 per person for ferry tix + food and alcohol it can be an expensive 6 hours. Try to stay overnight if you can to make it really worthwhile.

4.Get to Miss Lucy's Full Moon Party at sunset if possible and stake out a seat under a tree in case it rains.

5.Do get a 4WD but don't get a brand new one--it's too much stress cause you know it's gonna get scratched.

6.Do plan a day out on a boat. There's nothing like being on the water for the day. You get to see the island from a whole different perspective.

7.If you're traveling with another couple or a group, do identify what tasks/chores need to be done around the house (laundry, dishes, trash removal, departure day clean-up) and make sure that these are divided up evenly so that the work is evenly distributed. Don't assume that someone will recognize that something needs to be done and do it-chances are that person will be you... all the time.... Constantly.

8.Do get separate Jeeps. Inevitably you will want to do one thing while your companions want to do something else. One vehicle per couple or family unit provides flexibility and in many cases, sanity. Just think: $420 is cheaper than a defense attorney.

9.Do take the time to send your newbies a packing list. Inevitably they (if they are women) will have visions of sarongs, maxi dresses, strappy sandals and big floppy hats dancing in their heads. You need to do your best to combat these images with the realities of t-shirts, shorts, tevas and bug spray. You will have to remind newbies of this reality repeatedly and it STILL may not get through.

10. Do plan days to be apart from your traveling companions. No one wants to be attached at the hip. Don't abandon newbies on the first day, but after they seem comfortable let them loose. After all exploring the island on your own is half the fun.

11.Do make an effort to attend a forum gathering on island -- even if it is just few of you. If you don't hit it off with folks you can go on your merry way, but there's nothing like the feeling of having extended family on island at the same time.

12.Do make a plan or have an itinerary in hand for the trip. There's nothing more frustrating than sitting around and staring at one another trying to decide what to do. Even if you DON'T end up doing a single thing that you put on the itinerary, it's better than nothing.

13.Take some time to research what live music or cultural events are available on island during the duration of your stay. Once on island this stuff can be difficult to track down since it's kind of catch as catch can.

14.Do research the cruise ship schedule in advance to determine how many cruise ships are in port on which days. This can help you avoid major crowds on the North Shore Beaches, Cruz bay and on the North Shore Roads.

15.Do take a drive out to the East End (of the road) and visit Vie's and Sloop.

16.When the North Shore beaches are choppy or busy, head to Salt Pond or Lameshur Bay. Chances are the water will be calmer and there's always excellent snorkeling.

17.Do walk the Drunk Bay Trail. Even if you are completely out of shape it's a totally do-able flat hike. Just wear shoes and more than bathing suit. Bring water.

18.Do wear a waterproof, sweatproof SPF 15. Always. Re-apply often. You won't burn and you'll end up with a rockin' tan.

19.When at Maho or one of the other beaches with ultra fine sand, pick up sand from the bottom and use it to lightly scrub your face and body. This is a great mid trip tip. It gets rid of the dead skin.

20.Do get a good pair of Keen H2's or Teva's. Don't bring too many shoes. A pair of Keen-like shoes plus a pair of flip-flops will suffice.

21.If traveling in December or the winter months, DO bring at least one sweatshirt or long sleeved shirt. The nights can get cool.

22.Do bring Ben's bug spray. Highest percentage of DEET possible. Screw that other stuff. The bugs think of that stuff like you think of a cocktail. It's just to get the party started. Don't waste time or money. Also, apply BEFORE you feel the first bite.

23.Do bring walkie-talkies. These have a number of uses. Also, bring the charger too.

24.Last but not least, just remember that there's ALWAYS room for Jell-O (shots that is)!!

I hope you have enjoyed the installments of this missive. I appreciate your kind words and I hope that I have offered those of you who have read the installments a little bit of fun and entertainment as well as some helpful tips.

Peace out!!

Hey there Gromit,

Glad you're already booked for 6 months AND
thanks for all those great tips.

Traveling for the 1st time with a group of
newbies and I am SURE I'll be looking your list
over a few times :o

This past June we brought my mom to STT and
that suprisingly enough wasn't so bad, BUT
we could hardly do anything on our own
Not this time though.

Happy New Year to you and hubs 8)

...and thanks for the TR

Loved, loved, loved your TR, Gromit. Maybe we'll see you in June when you're there. Thanks for taking us along for the ride. Your DO and DON'T list is a good one especially the separate Jeeps tip. We learned that on our first trip to STJ. Never share a Jeep with someone else.

I couldn't agree with #11 more. I love to make friends everywhere but it seems it happens easier and faster on St. John (and with forumites) than anywhere else. :)

Thanks, again, for your reports Gromit. I hope your next countdown goes fast!

Thanks for all the installments of your trip report, Gromit and especially your tips in this one. That really bummed me out and shocked me about the M& M stealing father. What a jerk. Anyway, glad you had a good trip and are still speaking to your in-laws!

I'm like some of the others on here. I'm starting to get nervous about taking the newbies in May. I may copy your list and email it to the newbies. Hopefully they won't be offended.

Gromit - Thanks for doing such a good job with the trip reports and taking the time to do them.

I loved your report and most of all, the do's and don'ts.
It is sometimes hard to remember that in the thick of pre-trip excitement that a little pre-planning and expectation setting, you can avoid issues while on island.

Love your reports crazy gal!! We'll hook up again on island one day!
I agree about the Jost day trip not being long enough. This time we're spending our last 2 nights over there. Should be fun!

Gromit, thanks for taking the time to share your adventures with us.

I have to say that I love the sand as exfoliant idea! I hadn't thought of that before.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.
