Friday December 12 (Day 6 of 7): Day on Jost with Vicki & Co.; Breakfast at Soggy Dollar; drinks and chairs at Miss Gertrudes; Roti at Foxy's; Meeting Foxy and hearing his off-color island dog joke; Meeting Ivan and checking out Ivan's campground. In-laws went shopping; Dinner Out at Miss Lucy's Full Moon Party with Sydney & Co. Drinks at Skinny's; Tips for getting a table at Miss Lucy's FMP for 8 after 7pm; Back to Skinny's after FMP for more food and drinks; and Impromptu sing-along at Skinny's.
By 4:30 we were back o STJ and went briskly through US customs in Cruz Bay.
We hauled ass back to the villa, showered and changed grabbed the IL's and the two jeeps and headed to Skinny Legs to meet up with Sydney, her hubby and their new friends staying with them for this part of their journey on the boat.
We all had a round of drinks and listened to the musicians who were just getting started there at Skinny Legs for the night.
After about 45 minutes of getting to know one another, FIL generously paid for the round and off we went to Miss Lucy's.
Now fair warning: If you are with a large group and trying to find a table at Miss Lucy's FMP at 7:00 pm you are pretty much SOL.
I suspected as much, but at that moment the gods were on my side. The heavens opened up and it began to pour. I felt like Moses parting the Red Sea cause tables opened up all around us as the lightweights scurried for shelter.
The band stopped playing and covered their stuff up and we pulled two tables together and crashed an unsuspecting Danish couple currently living in Yorktown, VA. It's family style at Miss Lucy's so everyone just has to share.
Fortunately our tables were positioned under the trees and it stopped raining. Soon, we settled in got comfortable and watched the moon rise over the water.
The IL's didn't bring a real camera on the trip. They brought a disposable camera - which is totally fine.
But MIL begins telling FIL to "Go get a picture of the moon," and here's the kicker... "Make sure you get the moons reflection off the water."
Now, at this point I just begin to laugh out loud. Maybe it was the 6+ painkillers I drank that day or maybe it was the first round of Miss Lucy's rum punches, but I'm like, "Mom!! That Sh!tty little camera is about one piece of Chinese plastic away from a prize in a Cracker Jack box. He'll be lucky to get the moon, much less a reflection!"
At this point I think that Sydney ALMOST peed her pants.
Food was good, but there was not enough of it and the Danish couple got us back for invading their space by eating the very LAST piece of key lime pie and not even pretending to be remorseful about it in the least! A little passive aggressive, No?
The moon was spectacular that night and a sight to behold. Having exhausted all that Miss Lucy's could offer us for the evening and the old folks muttering about getting to bed (you know who you are!) we headed back to Skinny Legs. Mind you it was not yet even 9:00 pm!!
In the parking lot we said our good bye's, the IL's were going to go back to the Villa, but Sydney & co had decided to stay for just one more drink.
Skinny's was still rocking and rolling with this really great group playing all sorts of great tunes. People were dancing and we scored my favorite table.
The IL's suddenly walked in and said they had changed their minds and wanted to stay. Before we knew it all 8 of us were ordering burgers and hot dogs and drinking again!
My FIL is a Penn State grad and he was wearing his Penn State Hawaiian shirt that we bought him a couple years back. Anyway a couple of guys sitting at the table next to us had gone to West Virginia University (rivals) and there was some good natured teasing going back and forth between the tables.
Before we knew it this kid was up at the microphone and the band began to play a recognizable tune - the kind that you used to know long ago, but you aren't sure what it is.
And then the kids starts to sing slowly ..."Almost heaven, West Virginia"
His voice starts to crack at first and you can tell he's really nervous but trying to represent. His voice gets a bit stronger... "Blue ridge mountains, Shenandoah river."
Then taking pity on him Sydney and I start to chime in from the table, "Life is old there, older than the trees; Younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze."
Then EVERYONE in Skinny's starts to sing along:
"Country roads, take me home
To the place, I be-long
West Virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads"
Finally, MIL starts singing at the top of her lungs along with our new Canadian friends and now we are all singing at the top of our lungs until we sing every verse of the song and are pounding the tables to the rhythm of the music.
The young man finished confidently with everyone clapping and whistling.
All I can say is: Only in Coral Bay. Only at Skinny Legs. Only on STJ.
And another long and fun-filled day drew to a close, full moon high in the sky, we hugged our new friends good-bye and bid them a safe journey on the water in the week ahead.
Only one more full day to go until the Walk of Woe.
Tomorrow: Snorkeling at Salt Pond, lunch at The Tourist Trap; Drink Right, Keep Left; Dinner at Asolare.
