Gromit's Adventures in Happy Land: Day 4
(Again, long but worth it!)

Location: Mayan Sky (Upper Carolina) Coral Bay

Gromit's Cast of characters:

Gromit: ME!!
Mr. Gromit: Hubby
MIL: Mother in law (Newbie)
FIL: Father in law (Newbie)
ScubaGirl & Keith: Our cruise director and captain for the day
Mark & Meredith: Handy deck crew
Vicki & Co: Vicki, her hubby, his best friend and his wife (Their actual names are being withheld to protect the innocent).

*Other Krewe members will be added as the days progress!

Wednesday December 10 (Day 4 of 7): ScubaGirl, Vicki, Gromit and their respective Krewes meet; A day on the 46' Cat; Snorkeling Waterlemon (the wrong direction!); Starfish, Conchs and barracuda - Oh MY!; Jell-O shot virgin - no more!; A cross between Rock Hudson and Gomer Pyle; Snorkeler rescue; Marks mystery fruit punch concoctions; Zamboni operators rock!; Gromit as Rachel Ray in the Cat kitchen with the Mary Poppins fridge!

Let me begin by saying that Hands DOWN one of the best days ever!!

We got up early packed up the goodies and headed to the Annaberg parking lot. We had agreed to meet Vicki & Co. and Scuba Girl here at 10:00 am.

Anal retentive as I am I was there at least 15 minutes early.

I will admit there's always this apprehension when you agree to meet people in person for the first time.

I mean we're practically family on this board but there's always that feeling you get inside, "Are they really going to show up? What will they think of me? Are 12 complete strangers from Canada, Delaware, Tennesse and Virginia who have never met one another actually going to have fun?"

I was particularly nervous because I was bringing the IL's and wasn't sure how all of this would work.

ScubaGirl and I had met once last December at a Beach Bar Forum gathering. We sized each other up quickly and realized that we were probably separated at birth. Her hubby Keith was also a doll and he and Mr. Gromit had some fun as well.

ScubaGirl was generous enough to invite all of us on board their boat for the day of fun, snorkeling and sun.

As the clock inched closer to 10:00 am I got more nervous. Within a few minutes I see this sprite of a spunky girl with a big smile on her face walking towards me. VICKI!!! I was wearing my peace sign tie dye and she says to me, "I KNEW that had to be you!"

I gave her a huge hug. Everyone was introduced and we headed over to the beach to await the dinghy arrival.

A few minutes later ScubaGirl's hubby Keith comes roaring into the bay proudly wearing his "Haven't I Seen You on the Forum?" t-shirt! Go Keith!

It took three trips to get everyone and their gear (read: crap - I had enough stuff to stay for a week!) over to the boat but Keith and his handy first mate Mark are pros!

Once on board everyone got acquainted really quickly. After a round of drinks we decided that some snorkeling was in order and we all donned our snorkel gear and dove in.

We headed for Waterlemon Cay. Huge starfish dotted the sandy bottom about 30 feet below. ScubaGirl, Meredith and I had teamed up and decided to snorkel around the Cay.

Tip: If you're snorkeling Waterlemon Cay go around the Cay COUNTER clock-wise.

We made the mistake of going clockwise. I am a really strong swimmer but this was some of the toughest swimming I have ever done. The snorkeling around the Cay was spectacular though.

Once safely back to the Beach side of the Cay things were calm again and we just floated. Sydney even dove down to get a starfish and brought one up for the MIL to check out.

Sydney is an awesome underwater guide. She really knows what to look for. She spotted conch and we even watched a Barracuda cruise by.

Another Tip: Sydney had some float noodles available on board for folks that weren't comfortable swimming in open water. I suggested to the MIL that she avail herself of a noodle. At first she resisted but then I think she thought better of it and accepted the offer.

After a good snorkel around the Cay, everyone headed back to the boat for lunch. We got dried off and changed and pulled out the lunch fixings. It was a little buffet and everyone just helped themselves.

Turned out FIL and Keith were hitting it off well and the rest of us were just having an all around good time. Vicki was snapping photos like paprazzi in the hunt for Angeline Jolie. We just did as we were told

Vicki is truly a talented photog. I told her she should make a calendar to give to her friends.

After lunch it was time for Jell-O shots. If ever there was an ice breaker, these are it!!

We started passing those puppies around and sure enough the party got into full swing.

We just sat around, slurping Jell-O shots and talking about anything and everything.

People told stories and jokes and everyone had a BLAST.

I am pleased to report that Vicki is no longer a Jell-O shot virgin. I was pleased to be the one to bring her to the dark side, but I think she didn't mind too much since she asked for more!! Go Vicki!! What's not to love? Jell-O? Alcohol? What more can a girl need?

I can also report that all of the recipes turned out fabulously. While they were all good, my personal fave was the Margarita shot. But everyone seemed to find a favorite flavor and stick with it.

Sydney then surprised me with a birthday present she brought from Canada and everyone sang happy birthday to me. Thanks Sydney!!

Here's where I'm going to get a little sappy and then I'll snap out of it--promise.

Sappy Begins Here:
The funny thing is, that most of the people you meet in your life as a grown-up you meet through work or other friends or because of where you live.

But ScubaGirl and Vicki and I met through the board because of our genuine love and interest for St. John and the special place we hold for it in our hearts.

By virtue of our passion for this place and the board itself we brought other people along with us to discover that passion and as a result we had a group of people from vastly different backgrounds who got along incredibly well.

It felt like an old time southern family reunion. Where you may not KNOW everybody but you feel a kinship for one another and there's an automatic trust and acceptance.

So, a special "Thank You" to Anthony for providing a space in the cyber universe for folks to meet and become friends!

End Sappy!

Vicki's hubby and pals were a HOOT! Her hubby's BFF described himself as a combination of Rock Hudson and Gomer Pyle and I have to admit that I can see the resemblance, but told him he favors Gomer Pyle!!
We all had a good laugh about that one.

While sitting on deck some snorkelers passed the boat with one guy trailing behind. When he got to the mooring ball he grabbed on clearly exhausted. He hung on for a minute and one of the guys shouted out to him. They asked him if he was OK and he said he was. But Keith and Mark wasted no time. They quickly recognized that if he was tired enough to need to grab onto that little ball he was in trouble even if he wasn't willing to admit it.

They jumped in the dinghy and headed straight to him and helped him into the boat. They then took him to the boat he was swimming toward which was still a good 100 yards away from the mooring ball.

Some folks might have just taken this guy at his word. But I was glad that Keith and Mark didn't.

It's a good lesson for folks to pay attention to those around you on the water and to use your instincts.

Sure the guy might have made it to his boat just fine, but he just as easily could have not. Be careful out there folks and know your limits!

After the serious moment was over the boys arrived back to the boat and Mark started mixing up his mystery fruit punch concoction. Don't know what was in that thing--not sure he does either--but it was damn fine.

Towards the end of the afternoon we all perched on the front of the Cat for a group photo. Vicki will have to post it.

We all chowed down on the brownies for a mid-afternoon snack and just hung out and watched the sun go down.

At some point we all started asking what everyone did for a living and do believe that ScubaGirl's friend Mark had the BEST job. He's in charge of the ice at the local hockey rink and he drives a ZAMBONI!!!

I don't care who you are or where you live, I can bet someone you know has always wanted to drive one of those things! I told him if I ever get up to Canada in winter I want to drive it!!

After the Zamboni fantasy discussion we noticed that it was getting dark and Vicki & co decided it was time to head back.

Also I knew the IL's would not be comfortable in the dinghy after dark so we urged them to get going. We decided to stay behind with Scuba Girl and her Krewe and figure out a plan for dinner.

We decided that going out for dinner was going to get complicated and since Mark and Meredith were going home the next day, Sydney and Keith said they wanted to empty out the fridge.

I said, "Hey, what the hell, I'll cook. What do you have?"

If you've never been on a boat before you probably can't appreciate what the refrigerator is like. They are short and DEEP. You basically have to sit on the floor and reach in. I dubbed it the Mary Poppins' fridge 'cause I was pulling out all SORTS of stuff.

You know how Mary Poppins had that big carpet bag and she could reach in and pull out full sized lamps, framed photos, farm animals etc.?

Well the fridge was like that. They could have kept a body in there and no one would have known!!

Basically I was trying to make a feast for 6 out of two steaks and leftovers from the week. Turns out they had two very thick New York strip steaks, some green peppers, onions, limes, BBQ sauce, apples, and margarine.

We still had some toasts, turkey and ham lunch meat, a small piece of brie and a small hunk of goat cheese leftover from lunch. We also had exactly six brownies, some mini oreos and plenty of rum and vodka.

I ask you, "What more does a girl need to work her magic?"

I went to work!

To me it's easy to cook a meal when you've got everything you need at your fingertips. But occasionally it's fun to pull an "Iron Chef" and work with what you have to create something.

I guess if I were really worth my salt I would have donned the snorkel gear and dove down with a spear gun and snatched a huge fish a la Survivor but I was willing to work with what I had.

I cut the steaks length-wise and then again in half to make 8 pieces. Since they didn't have any spices, I then dredged them in BBQ sauce and squeezed in some lime.

Then Sydney remembered she had bought a packet of STJ Cruz Bay Grill Rub as a gift.

I told her, "Gift shmift, I'll buy you some more. Fork it over I need some spices!!"

I sprinkled the spices over the steak and rubbed it in with the BBQ sauce.

I then cut the onions and green peppers into strips and sauteed them in the pan with some margarine. I added some vodka and some of the Cruz Bay grill rub. Sauteed some more.

I then prepared the appetizers. Using the toasts I layered each toast with a piece of ham or turkey.

Then I topped the ham with a small slice of brie and a small slice of apple. To the turkey I added a small piece of goat cheese and apple. Before I knew it I had appetizers on the table, steaks on the grill and the onions and peppers sauteeing away on the stove.

I instructed Sydney to take the mini Oreos and press one Oreo into the top of each brownie to jazz it up just a bit.

Meanwhile everyone noshed on the "fancy" appetizers while Mark kept his magic concoctions flowing!

Note to anyone attempting to cook on a boat: It's a one butt kitchen. Open some windows and prepare for a little seasick headache during the process. Being in a tight space and focusing on a task like cutting and cooking can make you a little woozy--or maybe it was all the alcohol? Who knows?!?!?

Also, you have to be ready to improvise. Go with the flow and be creative you just never know what will happen.

When the steaks were finished I layered them onto a plate and smothered them with the peppers and onions. We even used up what was left of the French bread. All in all nothing fancy but it was tasty and filling. Everyone raved about the spontaneous spread.

We had a great dinner and great conversation with some great people. We all reflected on what a fabulous day it had been all around.

We were two days from the full moon and the sky was so bright and clear you could almost read by the moonlight.

Keith, Sydney, Mark and Meredith were wonderful hosts and I just hope that I was able to earn my keep for the day by cooking dinner for them.

I really liked the layout of the Catamaran. You feel like there's tons of room. And the net on the front between the hulls gives you plenty of space to spread out during the day.

After some more good conversation it was getting late and time to head back to shore. We firmed up plans to meet up with everyone at Skinny's on Friday night. Another couple was joining them on the boat and we would head to Miss Lucy's Full Moon Party.

After hugs all around, Keith drove (is that the right term??) us in the dinghy back to Leinster beach.

The moon was high and we could see everything. The water was as smooth as glass.

I have to admit that there is a certain romance to being out on the water. There is nothing like it.

Once we were back on land and driving back from Annaberg to the villa Mr. Gromit and I were exhausted and couldn't wipe the smile from our faces.

It felt like midnight but was only 8:30. It had been a LONG day. We decided to keep going toward Skinny Legs. Luckily they were still in full swing so we stopped in to have a beer and reflect more on the day.

Good friends, good times and good food and all was right with the world.

Tomorrow: Francis beach; Lunch at Island Blues (Buffalo wing sauce is good on EVERYTHING!); and Dinner at Morgan's Mango.
*Another fine scatterbrained production

This has to be the funniest TR that I have ever read. It was like I was there to witness the whole adventure.
Having cooked on a boat for many years I can relate to the Mary Poppins fridge. Cooking was always a challenge but I loved it.
Thanks Gromit for my laugh of the day. Such a great way to spend a snowy day reading your TR.

Oh this is so gooooood...........Gromit you are doing a wonderful job writing (ya sneak). The day on the boat was awesome.....we were right there with ya.

Thank you to Keith & Mark for helping the snorkeler.......sometimes we are just too stubborn to ask for help, or we just don't realize how bad we've gotten. Great tip for us!

Vicki is no longer a jello shot virgin.......Did You Have Some Kind Of Ceremony???????

Anxiously awaiting pictures..............and you are SO RIGHT! I am very thankful to Anthony for putting together a first class forum and maintaining it as such. We have met some life long friends here. :P

Great ya got along so well with everyone. I know what ya mean about meeting new people thing. Anthony has done a great service for us as we would have never meant all these St John lovers without this board. I allready knew about the counterclockwise thing at Waterlemon but went clockwise anyway. It was ok until we went around the backside. That was a workout really took away from the snorkeling experience.I haven't been able to get anyone to make the hike back there since then.

Fun! It's like I am there all over again.

Okay, but can you believe I absolutely do not remember the snorkeler save? Did I have one jello shot too many? That's just sad. It must have happened while I took that "nap" on the trampoline....

Another shout out to Anthony, because I never would have met these great people without VIOL.

It WAS a good day!!

I particularly liked this part of your TR as we spent a day on the cat with Keith & Sydney last year. I went around the cay clockwise and didn't have enough energy left to swim over a little farther toward shore to see a big turtle everyone else saw. I just headed back to the boat because I know when my number's up! As it was, I floated on my back for part of the way. LOL!

You're making me really excited to spend a week on a cat with Syd & Keith next year! I hung on every word! Thanks for a great report, Gromit! :D

P.S. Vicki! I need pictures!!

Great report, Gromit! It really helps me get away from this 30 below zero day! Can I hire you as my chef? Your cooking "segments" are so inspirational. I'm strictly a follow the recipe girl. It works, but who brings cookbooks to STJ?
