Is there anything about STJ that you DON'T like??

But seriously, is there anything that you don't like about STJ? Maybe we need to discourage some people from going to STJ to keep it less crowded.

Here is one of mine:
I enjoy walking down the beach. You can get an even tan and people watch and get some exercise. There aren't any beaches that go for miles like in Florida and other places. Turks and Caicos/Provinciales/Grace Bay was a great walking beach. I like to walk on Cinnamon and Trunk but they are short.

No worries, STJ is still my favorite place.

Great question Sea-nile! Difficult to answer though, but I'll give it a shot.

The only thing I don't like about St. John is the junk laying on the sides of most residential streets.
rusted & wrecked cars
rusted & wrecked boats
rusted unidentified machinery

I'm sure there is not a junk yard to haul this stuff to, so I don't know how they could get rid of it.
(maybe have a "Clean-up the Other Side of St. John Day" and haul it onto a barge in a sealed crate and dump the crate in the deep dark ocean!)

Food prices but on the flip side I LOVE THE BOOZE PRICES. I also hate Salomon beach I reccomend all people to avoid this waste of a beach at all cost

Other than leaving, I'd have to agree the junk laying around and abandoned cars are a bit annoying. Lack of parking in Cruz Bay is also a bit of a bother, and of course, all the bug bites I get. But the views and amazing beaches make those things seems trivial.

Now that really bugs me at home (just ask my kids!), but on St. John, it doesn't bother me at all!

1) Leaving
2) Lack of adequate parking
3) Bugs that bite be they skeeters or no-see-ums
4) Rude tourists
5) Dangerous drives (mostly locals I suspect)

But I don't dislike any of the above enough to overcome my love the this wonderful place.

1. The overflowing/unsightly dumpsters are a little gross;and

2. Lack of one or two good swimming beaches with a beach bar (like BVI).

Oh, and the fact that it takes all day to get there from midwest.

Yes, please tell everyone to stay way. Clearly not worth the walk.

Besides that:

• - It’s so warm that you have to keep going into the clear blue Caribbean waters, or the pool at your villa, to cool off. Such a hassle.
  - And the water too, it's almost like bath water. What fun is it when the water is not in the low 60's (like on the Cape) so that it takes all your will power to overcome the cold shock before you get "use to it" (i.e. numb).
  - Then the variety of rum drinks. Do they really need to have so many? The stress of always having to decide.
  - All those beaches without any waves kicking up the sand and reducing the visibility. It can get really scary seeing all those colorful live things so far down.
  - Speaking of beaches, why is the sand so smooth and white? Why can’t STJ have normal sand like every other beach that burns your feet when you walk barefoot?
  - And the sheer number of beaches. Isn't it something like 34? Come on now, what island needs 34 beaches? It's utter ridiculous to expect us to have to choose which beautiful and uncrowded beach we are to go to each day.
  - Then all those shade trees that line the beaches making beach umbrellas so unnecessary - we really miss not seeing all the beach umbrellas that block the views.
  - Speaking of views, do all those sail boats have to anchor off of shore so we have to watch them gently bob in the water? A bit too serene for us.

We could go on and on, but it will just get us all worked up and then we'll have to whip up a batch of pain killers to get over it. Hmmm, come to think of it...

This is an interesting thread - thanks for starting it. There are SO MANY things to love about STJ, that there isn't much discussion on things people don't like.

I agree with the comments about trash and recycling. When we visit islands, we always wish we were really wealthy and could develop some way to deal with the trash. We would also subsidize a recycling program.

The first time we visited St John, we really didn't like the lack of West Indian culture and how "Americanized" it is. (Yes, I know it is the USVI, so I guess you would expect it to be like that.) We had visited 13 other islands prior to visiting St John so our expectations were molded by the experiences we had on those islands (we loved almost all of them and enjoyed the culture on each one). STJ is very U.S.-like, with only a few West Indian eateries and we just didn't expect that. Of course, now we love STJ because of all the wonderful things it offers and the sheer beauty of the island. And we found a few places with good West Indian food.

People who don't "GET ST. JOHN " on St. John complaining about the lack of hotels, lack of water pressure, walking to the beach, slow wait service,etc.
I can deal with the junk but people bitc*in about such a beautiful relaxing place, please
