Suggestions for 1 or 2 nights accomodation?

Post by alw1977 »

Hi all. Going to STJ in July, my first trip. We got a great deal on Hotwire at the Westin ($79 a night) for six nights, but want to add a seventh or eighth night on to our stay. Problem is, Hotwire has gone up to $369 a night (for what seems to be the Westin) and the Westin site is at $429. We could do it, but my internal accountant (and cheapskate) screams "NO" very loudly.

Any ideas for alternate accomodations for a night or two on STJ? I've already contacted Estate Lindholm and they are booked up. I'm getting a bit nervous that this passport requirement is causing a lot of folks to choose the USVIs and so things are booking up early. Or is Estate Lindholm always this popular?

Anyway, any other ideas for places around $200 a night in low season?

We stayed here 2 years ago on our way from St. John. Right in the heart of Old San Juan, Walking distance to El Morro and all the shops and historic Buildings resturants. It is in a 200 year old building, so don't expect new. For the price it was great because you don't need a car. just get a taxi. Also some great casinos walking distance from hotel.

95 nightly Howard Johnson Inn Plaza de Armas Old ...
The Howard Johnson in San Juan is located off of Route 36 West, Exit 37, is approximately one mile from Luis Munoz Marin International Airport, and five miles from Isla Grande Airport.
Property: Howard Johnson Inn Plaza de Armas Old San Juan

Check out Sailview, we're staying there in April. I will post a review and info afterwards. Off-season rates $135!

www.sailviewstjohn.com

Located in Estate Carolina, St. John, Sail View overlooks Coral Bay Harbor and is only minutes to the scenic tranquil East End. Set into the hillside, ¼ mile from the main road and nestled 300 feet above sea level, Sail View offers you a private terrace to relax and enjoy the breathtaking views. Sail View is only 5 minutes to Coral Bay where one will find many excellent restaurants and shopping, 10 minutes to St. John’s north shore beaches, where you can bask in the sun at some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and 25 minutes to Cruz Bay, St. John’s bustling center of activity.

A studio at Coconut Coast would be under $200/night, and you could walk into Cruz Bay. My aunt and uncle used to own there and they liked it very much. They said it was simple, clean, and convenient.

Thanks everyone. So far, I have written Coconut Coast, Star Villas, and Hillcrest to inquire. If I don't have luck at these places, I will call Sail View (which looks really nice, just a bit out of the way) and Samuels Cottages.

Just curious, is it terribly inconvenient to stay near Coral Bay?

I don't think it would be inconvenient--it just depends on what you want to do. You would definitely need a car, preferably with four wheel drive. The main roads are not bad (a few switchbacks excepted), but sometimes the roads to the villas can be hairy. I know the road to Estate Carolina is unpaved.

There are beaches all over the island, so that's not the issue. There are definitely places to eat out and so on in Coral Bay--it's less developed and more "laid back" than Cruz Bay (not that Cruz Bay is this big hopping party, but you know what I mean.).

Here's a couple of thoughts:

If you're not renting a car I'd check out the above suggestions plus try Tamarind: www.innattamarindcourt.com

If you are renting a car I'd think about spending your last 2 nights in Coral Bay. You could save a couple of the East End beaches for those days. Although I've never stayed at the Westin I know that resorts are "busy", something always going on. You'd probably enjoy the laid back lifestyle of Coral Bay.

You could always head on over to St Thomas and spend a couple of days at The Crystal Palace: www.crystalpalaceusvi.com You can enjoy beaches, restaurants, and shopping on STT!

Happy Planning!

I think you can get a room at Estate Lindholm for around $200 in the off season. http://www.estatelindholm.com/

Christine and I have stayed at the Tamarind Court whenever we've been in this situation. It's very convenient and the rooms are fine - clean, no bugs, wall a/c. We tend to stay in the lower cost tourist hotels when we are in Europe and this is bigger and nicer than those. If you need pampering then this is not the place.

we are going to st john in july also and had the same problem. a lot of places do not book for l or 2 nites. we are staying at villa bougainvilla, rented throught donald schnell artistic villas. The villa is in cruz bay, walking distance to town which we love. you might also want to try Star Villas. they are in cruz bay as well and are quite nice. went to look them over last year. good luck! you got a great deal on the Westin.

my friend, Don has a condo that might be available at Pastory Estates (near Pastory Restaurant). We've stayed there twice and it is VERY nice and should be in your budget. Check out his web site and give him a call ..tell him Mark and Debbie refered ya. www.stjohnvi.net The unit is the featured one called "Coral and Blue". I'm sure he'd work with you.

Thanks tarheelgirl. I'll give your friends place a look. I'm from Charlotte, NC - live in Atlanta right now, but I am a Tarheel ('99) myself. Most of our good friends live in the Raleigh area. We may find ourselves back up there within a few years.
