Just got back. Here is a photo of waves at Cinnamon Bay. This is earlier in the week. They were downright dangerous. We heard a rumor a child was seriously injured and the beach was closed one day. Hope that is not true.

We couldn't believe it. Hubby is 5"10, standing up in this photo.

Hope that posts, I haven't posted a photo before.

Had a great trip. Power was out for well over 24 hours with NO generator!!! When I recover I will try to write a trip report.

Needless to say, with the waves (northern swells, christmas winds-whatever you call it) and the power outage, it was a pretty crazy week, but still lots of fun!

I am sure Cinnamon was the worst since it is always slightly rougher/windier than the rest.

I am guessing that was one of the worst days. This photo was on our first day, we first rode by Maho, there were waves (not that bad) but no dry beach. So we knew Cinnamon would be rough but we figured it was the widest and would have the most room.

After that though-- just driving on the North shore road you could see the whitecaps, so we decided to go to all of the lesser known beaches (Vies, Lameshure, Saltpond), which was a great move. They were more crowded than usual, but not too bad.

By the end of the week (we went the 20-28th) it had calmed down and the very last day Maho was back to it's old self, much to the relief of my children, who were very concerned!!!

one more thing about this photo. the guy who is body surfing is our friend--I have a sequence of photos of this particular wave and it literally ripped his rash guard (a snug one) off of his body!

Wow! When we were there last November it was nothing like that!! Is this unusual??

We are going in December and heard that "Christmas winds" will bring better waves.

apparently this is the same thing-

better waves-it depends what you are looking for. fun for swimming, but there is no snorkeling in this situation. very murky.

Trunk Bay was closed for snorkling for several days-I am sure that was a liablity issue, just not safe for new snorklers/swimmers.

It was a fun change for the kids, but I prefer the quiet flat water myself...more peaceful. And as a parent, I couldn't relax while the kids were out in that, not even just on the edge. They were getting knocked over due to the undertow.

surfers paradise though!

I copied and pasted the link, it worked. I bet the kids did have fun playing in the waves! Cinnamon was almost like that when I visited (a zillion years ago it seems). The waves were fun to bob up and down in, they weren't quite as strong as the ones you photographed though. When I tried to go to Trunk, they had closed the beach due to the waves. I REALLY wanted to get in there and see them, but they weren't letting anyone pass. You could sure hear them crashing though!

Wow! I have seen waves like there before. I broke my toe walking out of the shoreline at Cinnamon on a rock several years ago. It's amazing how much stronger the waves can be there than at the Jersey shore

Wow, I never expect to see surf like that on St. John or St. Thomas, but there does seem to be some awesome swells sometimes!

Welcome Back Cap...Can't wait for Friday's Beach Pix!
'8)... Mother Ocean was startin' to crank out the northern swells when we were there in Nov....We witnessed Nascars' Becky do a 5 1/2 gainer with a triple twist at Hawks Nest!!... Thanks goodness she was OK..It was washing folks way up on the beach...Luckily they had emergency Miller Lite !!
