Layover In San Juan

Post by tralei714 »

Heading back to St. John the end of February and on our return flight we have a layover in San Juan over night. Any recommendations on where to stay? Also, will we need to pick up luggage and re check the next day? Thank You

do you want convenience or do you want something interesting?
if you want convenience there is a hotel at/in the airport.
if you want interesting there are some lovely places in old stj

You will have to claim your luggage - and even if not claiming it was an option, 3 words.....don't do it
San Juan can be the black hole for luggage
We love the El Convento hotel in Old San Juan but there are more affordable options if you prefer - let us know :)

Hi, On our first trip to St. John I did a layover for one night in Old San Juan. I do a lot of business with people in Puerto Rico and wanted stop in a say Hi. We were looking for something cheap. I found the Howard Johnson in Old San Juan, it is in a very old building. Not the best rooms in the world but in the heart of the City. I think we paid $70.00 dollars a night, but that was 3 years ago. We went to the casinos and played Black Jack, had a great time and went shopping the next day with our winnings. Went to the Fort which is a great to see. We had a great time. I'm sure there are much better places to stay, but for one night, I wouldn't bother with the most expensive hotel.

We stayed overnight in Old San Juan at Hotel Milano (someone on here suggested it) in 2007. Here is my link to that part of our report:

We have stayed at the Coral Princess and it was a nice little hotel - nothing fancy but clean with a/c :)

Another I want to try that gets fabulous write ups and is cheap is Da House right in Old San Juan (but I don't think they have tv's if that is important to you)

Hi tralei714!
This is just my 2 cents worth but if you have a 7:45 a.m. flight home the following morning, I would want to be as close to the airport as possible!!
This may sound cheesy, but if you get into San Juan around 8 p.m. you can check-in at the airport hotel (Best Western-hey, it looked pretty nice!!) to freshen up, go downstairs for a sushi dinner and over to the casino for a little blackjack. I think after a full vacation in St. John you will be pretty whipped to venture out too far since your flight is so early the next morning. Short walk to check-in and right to the gate!
Good luck & happy travels~

GOOD ADVISE! JUST A PS.. If you have a night flight on American it is overbooked ALOT. Give yourself an extra day. TAKE THE BUMP, They will put you up in the casino and comp you free tix's for your next trip!
