Rum alternatives???
HI everyone. I'm new to the forum and my husband and I are going to Coral Bay for two weeks in December. I was wondering if someone here had ideas for a refereshing drink to try since I'm no fan of rum? It seems like the demon rum is a main ingredient of all island libations mentioned. I drank something in Aruba called a Happy Helmsman and it definitely made me happy. The main liquor was vodka but I don't know the rest. Any suggestions for something else?

Hi Jane! Welcome to the forum! I don't like dark rum. But I DO love the light, flavored rums. Cruzan Coconut and Cruzan Mango are my favorites. You might give them a try, as they taste nothing like dark rum.
Or, I believe you could order just about any rum drink and ask the bartender to substitute the rum with vodka, and VOILA! your own personal island drink! A painkiller or a lime n' coconut made with vodka is pretty good. In fact, for years we've made lime n' coconuts with vodka, but we called it a "Foo Foo" because it was such a paper umbrella-type drink! In fact, I never had one made with rum until I got to St. John!

No Rum FooFoo
Since you are in our neighborhood, try our namesake cocktail, a Shipwreck Shake...........all kinds of goodies frozen together sans rum. It is vodka, Kahlua,
Baileys, pineapple and coconut with a touch of chocolate. But since you sound like a wino like me, we have a pretty decent wine list too.

If your experience with rum is limited to Bacardi, then that may taste like paint thinner to you when compared to one of the flavored Cruzan rums mixed in with your fav fruity concoction. While it may be too much to ask you to give any dark rums a go, give the flavored Cruzans a shot if you haven’t – it may change your mind about rum.

Speaking of strawberry daiquiris, for various reasons, I still have not had a World Famous Banana Daiquiri at Mountain Top. (Sometimes it was because I'd just had, on the way up, a Bunch of Coconuts at the dairy) This may be the year, though! In fact, this may be the very week.

This is a timely question for me as we are taking my MIL and FIL with us on their first trip to STJ (our umpteenth).
Anyway, MIL believes that she is allergic to rum.
Now I'm not sure if she's "allergic" to rum in the same way that I'm "Allergic" to tequila.
My allergy of course was due to... say... an evening of countless tequila shots with the Marines from HMX-1 (the presidential helicopter squadron), god bless those boys as they held my hair while I got "allergic"-- and didn't even try to take advantage (imagine that!)
Anyway.. has anyone ever heard of an allery to rum? Seriously? Or is this just MIL being a bit HM??
I guess I'm going to suggest that she just ask to substitute vodka for rum.
I'm open to other suggestions....
