HELP!

Post by AnyTing »

Calling on my forum friends. Guys, I have a really weird problem. This is going to be hard to believe but....I can't get in "pre-trip excitement mode" about my upcoming STJ trip. I know this is just inherently WRONG, but it's just not there. I know, I know, what the heck is wrong with me???? Right? Life has just thrown a lot at me lately and I am kind of in the dumps. I just can't seem to get very excited about much. I have even become a lurker on the forum, for pete's sake.

With just over 2 weeks to go, I have to get some enthusiasm going or I won't even have the will to pack. I need help.

Hit me with whatever you have. Your favorite photos, describe your best STJ day, your favorite on-island story, some things I should do when I am there. Let's call it the "Best of St. John."

Help me get in the mood! (minds outta the gutter, men.....)

VickiH, close your eyes and just envision that amazing view from Sunnyledge, imagine the warmth of the sun and the relaxed feeling you have.

Think about Caneel buffet and all the lobster and desserts you can have.

Picture yourself at the Beach Bar...taking a photo and posting the crappy photo on here so you bring it all to us.

Now, go and make yourself a Painkiller or whatever your favorite drink is.

You will get there as far as being exciting. When life brings you down this far, stomp it back down and focus on the amazing experience that you'll soon have.

I'm willing to bet that as your trip gets closer, that excitement will magically reappear. You're such a STJ veteran that there's not a whole lot of mystery left as to what to expect, and I think that's an element that has managed to keep my excitement fueled long after the obsessive planning has been done.

In the meantime, see if there's something you haven't done - even something that you may not have had a great interest in doing before because it would keep you from other activities, and try and focus/research on that, to see if it helps.

Here's an idea: We love snorkeling at Waterlemon, and we've always done it the same way - snorkel from the rocks out over the grass/turtle beds, around the cay, and back through the moon jellies and starfish to our entry point. Beautiful and fun every time.

On our last visit there this past trip, we wanted to hang out longer, but didn't feel like the swim along the cay, so we just snorkeled in the shallows close to shore. It was like a baby nursery!

We could have spent HOURS, just floating, looking at the TINY, TINY, juvenile tropical fish! We saw bristleworms, located a little octopus - mostly stuff that wouldn't make people's "checklist" but we really had a ball.

But I really think that once you start doing all of the last minute things that you have to do before leaving on a trip, that your excitement will be back!

Or you could give me your tickets, villa...

I have been there myself!! So much so that even when I got to STJ it didn't feel real. I was so weighed down with work, life, people etc.

So I did what I always do, I started to think about what to pack. Even this most mundane task got me focused.

Then I grabbed one of my Caribbean cook books and made something for dinner that would bring back the memories. Heck even good BBQ works.

I got on line to Key West Aloe and ordered some SPF and aloe products.

I started going to the tanning salon. (I know there are haters of tanning salons out there but this is what works for me to keep from getting fried when I get on island).

Since you're traveling with others, think about what you want to do each day. Make an itinerary. Even if you trash it when you get there it will give you some guidance.

And last but not least, remind yourself that you get to meet ME on the 10th!!!!! As Flip Flop will tell you I have my own ways of snapping people out of the "Funk" -- and it generally involves Jello-shots.

Hugs to you sistah... just a handful of days to go.
*Another fine scatterbrained production

Lots of good ideas, folks!
Asidr from the tarmac smell, I often miss the breeze and scents of the island. Mmmmagic!
Also yet another thing I miss is the laid back attitude that Island Time gives most people there. I'm a bartender in Jersey, and often wish some of my impatient customers would experience STJ, and learn how to relax! Heck,- they're the ones committing road rage, and passing me on the way to the bar where I work! Can't get a drink 'til I get there, folks!
Island Time means the world to me. It lets me get back to the simple core of myself.I recharge, come home relaxed, then get moving on plans for the next trip.
If you want a laugh or two, my TR is under Overdue Trip Report/Island Horizons, and pix under STJ. Memories. We're a bunch of goofballs!
Hope to have helped!

I get this ginger body wash made by Burts Bees and use it on every tropical vacation. Then about two weeks before my next vacation I start using it again. The smell always takes be back to my tropical vacation and gets me excited for my upcoming trip. It works like a charm for me.

I agree with Gromit. Get yourself to the tanning salon. Make a pedicure appointment. Start setting out the stuff you're going to pack. Get your snorkle gear out. And make a list of everything that you LOVE LOVE LOVE about Sunnyledge and send the list to me because I just booked Sunnyledge for 2 weeks from Feb 24 until March 10th. I want to get excited about it so come on now and get those juices flowin' girl!! I'm depending on ya'. :D
