Our take on STJ vs STT
Our take on STJ vs STT
I know that this is mostly a forum with STJ lovers and that's it's rare to get a perspective from STT lovers.
OK, we're here to give it to you.
Some of you met us at Honeymoon on November 4th. Everybody was great, but that walk, as I posted already was a killer. We know Cruz Bay a little and love the Beach Bar. We love St. John Spice and stop in the stores at Mongoose. We've been to Woody's and some other places that I can't even recall the name.
We've rented dinghys...we've gone to Cinnamon, Trunk, Hawknest, Honeymoon, Maho, etc. All extremely gorgeous, gorgeous beaches (We're not in NJ anymore)
)
We took the car barge over on purpose this year so that we could drive all over STJ. After getting lost like crazy in Cruz Bay (It's really hard to get around there, we were trying to find Centerline (Route 10). I was the navigator and I wasn't doing that well, but we finally found it. I have to say that the drive out to Coral Bay really didn't send us that much excep for the turns...crazy turns. We drove every road, got lost, got found and then found Route 20....that's a beautiful ride. Going past all the gorgeous beaches I actually felt sorry for my husband (Glenn) because he had to keep his eyes on the road.
We eventually ended up at Mongoose, shopped and then on to the Beach Bar for some tuna down now (amazing and not to be missed) and French dip for husband, which he loved.
Comparing STJ to STT is pretty difficult because we know you all LOVE STJ, but as I've said before, if you come into the airport, get on a car barge or the people ferry, and don't take the time to see the pretty side of STT, then you're missing something very beautiful. The North Side of STT can compare to STJ anyday. Going up to Mountaintop is a view that you will never see anywhere else in the world. Going up to Paradise Point in Havensite at sunset is something we'll never forget.
I hope none of you take offense to this post, but I do think that STT is underestimated very much. It's all a matter of where you go, what you make of it and what you take away with you.
If anybody is interested in a trip report, no problem, I'll do one. I just wanted to let everybody know that we tried, but STT has more to do, we're comfortable with it and we'll be back. We'll also be back on those ferries visiting STJ. That's what's so nice about the 2 islands being so close. Just hop on over!

No offense taken. I am the same way about STJ.
I have been all over STT; enjoyed wonderful dining, visited beautiful homes over looking perfect caribbean views, lounged on soft sandy beaches, and shopped all over. There are many things that people like about STT, I like them in very small doses and prefer to be on STJ. I don't like so much to do and so many cars. I like twisty mountain roads with just a few cars and hikes to the beach.
It is all a matter of personal preference and I don't think anyone would fault anyone for that.
Glad you had a great time and I hope that you will share the rest of your trip report. I enjoy reading about any USVI vacation.

Take offense? I don't think so, you silly girl! I'd LOVE to read a trip report on St. Thomas! I've been wanting to explore that island, but have never gotten the chance. Maybe we can work it into our trip next April.
I've been up to the St. Peter Greathouse on STT, which I believe is a similar view to the one from Mountaintop and that side of the island has always intrigued me since I saw it and couldn't get to it!
A picture I took from St. Peter Greathouse:

I would love to hear your trip report from STT.........bring in on!!!!!!!!
Like so many others we love STJ because of the quiet laid back environment. It's easy (once you get there)and simple, and most importantly full of nature.
So PLEASE tell us more about STT, I've always been curious about the North Shore and beaches other than Magens Bay. Is it like the "Trunk" of STJ????

Hi Connie!
Although we loved STJ, we also liked STT very much. Stayed at Secret Harbour. Saw a lot. Were only disappointed about Coral World (perhaps because we didn’t have children with us). Unfortunately we never found Mountaintop
. You say that you have problems finding the right way on STJ, but for me it was child’s play compared to finding the way on STT
.
It would be nice to see a trip report from STT too.

We spent a number of weeks, over the years, on STT with a day trip to STJ. Although we like STT and there is a lot to do, we also like STJ. We will probably spend most of our time on STJ in the foreseeable future. The best part of STJ comapred to STT is the quiet and lack of hustle and turmoil that I find on STT. I have enough of that 51 weeks a year. I'd like to get away from it for the 52nd week.
Having said that, I want to hear about your trip. We were fortunate to have our "own taxi driver" Dave some years ago. He took us everywhere. We paid him to take us on a tour of the island one day and he took us from end to end. Everyone needs to get to Drake's Seat and see that panorama.

Well said Connie and I must say we feel exactly the same way. Love STJ as we do STT but prefer to stay on STT. Once you learn your way around I find the roads are much more scenic. Quite a bit of the STJ roads are like tunnels through the forest which I understand is part of the alure to many folks. Then again there are a few that take your breath away. I must say it is nice not to have to drive to and from the Beach every day. Something to be said for being able to walk from your room/villa to a gorgeous Beach, pull up a chair and chill for the day with the only interruptions being refilling your drink from your room or some snorkel time. The vast majority of posters on this forum are indeed STJ addicts. Nothing wrong with that. It seems they have actually become an extended family of sorts. Again, nothing wrong with that. I do recall some posts a while ago that requested the forum be dedicated only to STJ and other Islands would likewise have their own forum. Personally I'm glad Anthony did not do that but I think all can see from the tone of your post that you felt your STT slanted post may not be well accepted on this forum. Kinda like you were trespassing. Makes one wonder how many other would be posters stay away for the same reason. Anyway it's just nice to see your post was so well accepted. Did you stay at Sapphire?

I'd love to read more on STT as well. If you watched our vacation video, the hotel footage and night time, elasped timed shots were all from STT. I like both islands, they both have different things to offer. All of the islands, BVI's, etc is uniquely it's own.
I lived in STJ for a while and so it'll always have a special place in my heart. While in STJ, I only went to STT once a month for a Kmart run. So STT is still unfamilar to me and I'm enjoying getting to know her.

Oh Connie, you're such a loser!
I'd like to hear about STT also. My first trip to STJ in '01 involved a taxi ride through STT that resembled that Mad Max movie.
The driver told us that he'd have to take a short cut to make the ferry at Red Hook, so off we went.
He took us through some spooky back roads, where we ssaw a bunch of kids beating a dead dog with a stick, as they danced and jumped around it. The dog was charred black, and smoke was still coming off of it, as it had also been burned at some point. I then vowwed never to spend more time on STT than necessary.
I truly appreciate what you're saying, and even though that image is alive and well in my memory, I've tried to be more open minded over the past few years.
All that said- Bring it on!
Smiles, and we should get together! I'm only 20 minutes from any bridge to PA!
Yours-
MJ

We also prefer to stay on STT and take day trips to STJ and/or other islands. We like them all, but STT just suits us better as a home base. We too also like not having to drive to a beach. We walk a hundred or so feet and we are on the beach. Being able to run back to the villa and refill the cooler or get a snack is priceless for us. So, yes bring on the STT trip report!
I guess I just don't see why anyone would think this forum would not welcome trip reports from STT. This is one of the, if not, the nicest forums on the internet for the usvi's. We love to hear about STT, STX and STJ and on the off topic forum- all other trips to all places. Our first trip to the VI's was to the Wyndham in STT and we had a great time. We explored as much as we could and were pleased for the most part. We did not like Magen's bay due to the cruise ship crowdedness. We do prefer St John but we don't bag on STT. Everyone has their reasons on why they go where they go. Everyone is welcome here.
When will I see St John again?
