I just posted this on the "flavored rum" thread, but thought maybe I should post it here too, since this is the Official Food Porn thread and all. 
I haven't made these in years, but maybe it's because I remember them being sort of a hassle. However, that being said, I wasn't much into cooking back then, either. I do remember them tasting like Heaven, though, or I wouldn't have saved the recipe these many years. Now that this flavored rum idea has been brought to my attention, I am definitely going to make rum balls this year for the holidays. Can you just imagine these with coconut or mango rum? OMG! Totally orgasmic!

Rum Balls
1 6oz. pkg. chocolate chip
1/2 cup sour cream
1/8 tsp. salt
Corn syrup (if needed)
2 cups vanilla wafers, crushed
1/3 cup RUM!!
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 cup powdered sugar
1 cup walnuts or pecans, finely chopped
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate, ground
Melt chocolate chips over hot, not boiling, water. Add sour cream & 1/8 tsp. salt. Stir until smooth. Let stand in the refrigerator overnight.
Remove mixture from the fridge & form into little balls about the size of grapes. If necessary, add just enough corn syrup to make molding easy.
Mix together the crushed vanilla wafers, rum, butter, powdered sugar, nuts & 1/4 tsp. salt. Pour this mixture over the balls and coat them, making them about the size of walnuts. Roll the coated balls in the ground chocolate.
Store them in a tightly covered jar. They will improve with storage and will keep in the refrigerator for weeks.

Now that I've written all that, I'm thinking a little bit of coconut (toasted or not) in there with the vanilla wafers could be pretty awesome, too.

I agree----if you've saved a recipe for years, even if you can't really remember it, the taste must have been incredible...
I love to cook, don't truly care to bake, but DO enjoy making a variety of beautiful and tasty Christmas cookies to give as gifts.. I think this sounds like a great addition to my repertoire and have added it to my recipes folder. Thx!

CaGirl- This is an easy alternative that doesn't require any icky melting/stove work. I make these during the holidays and they are super easy. Be sure and crush the nuts REALLY fine, or they tend to not hold their shape (or leave them out if you wish), and I add just a skosh more booze. I pack them in a plastic container with a lid, layer of balls, wax paper, balls etc., Then I put a piece of thin aluminum over it, and snap the lid on for at least 48 hours.
Bourbon Balls
75-80 vanilla wafers
2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup cocoa
1/4 cup light corn syrup
1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
1/2 cup bourbon
A dusting of powdered sugar
Crush vanilla wafers into tiny crumbs and put in a large mixing bowl (should be about 3 cups). Add 2 cups of powdered sugar, pecans and cocoa. Mix thoroughly.
Now add in bourbon and corn syrup. Roll the dough into 1 inch balls. Dust with powdered sugar (you may wish to dust with regular sugar instead). Refrigerate balls in a tightly covered container.
These are best when aged for a few days.
Depending on tastes, you may substitute either Rum or Brandy for the Bourbon.
Recipe makes about 60 balls.

OOhhhh, I get your point. Maybe any Rum Ball recipes should have this in the directions: Reserve 2 cups of Rum...roll 10 balls, swig the reserve, roll 10 balls, swig the reserve....you know, for incentive! hi forum friends from the server room of the house I am staying at! It is the only place we were able to get a connection. based on all the recent threads going on here maybe that is a good thing.
We are in tonight because Caili has a fever--Liam had the same one a couple of days ago. I think it is a requirement that all kids get sick while at Disney!
I cooked tonight--pasta, chicken parmesean, grilled sausages, big salads, two kinds of garlic bread. No pics as I am afraid to load anything using one of the computers in here--there are seven CPU units running and I don't know what they are for and I don't want to mess anything up! I have to say that the produce in the stores down here is pretty bad (speaking of stuff for salads only!), but overall, the groceries are a lot cheaper.
I'm off to the jacuzzi. See you again Wednesday!

I made this tonight. Autumn Cranberry Beef Stew. I was a little scared of cranberry with beef but it was a very nice dish. Here's a link to the recipe
