I (also) absolutely do not believe that everyone who isn’t voting for Obama is a racist and sorry that some took my post as to mean that - but, I guess, that's the way the mop flops (as they say in England) and some will read only what they want to believe.
Your post was well written and thoughtful - and you said it far better than I ever could.
Drinks on me next trip.

I too believe McCain is trying to loose this race. I think he's run a terrible campaign and deserves to loose and will loose. I also believe abortion is the single biggest issue dems (esp. female dems) are voting for. I happen to think abortion is an abomination, but I also know I will not change any minds. So we'll respectfully agree to disagree.
Have a great Sunday everyone. STJ soon come!!

i am not a fan of abortion--i think that most persons are not. seriously. most 'pro choice' persons would tell you that-. -, But i do think that it is a decision that is private and should not be legislated.
ugh, got drawn back in.....the light...... the light.........

Pandering to the far right, or the far left for that matter, is a mistake. I suppose the true middle just isn't buying it this time. I don't believe this election is over, but I think it would have been if McCain had undertaken a truly rational, thoughtful, issues (not Social issues but economic and international) driven campaign he would have won without much of a fight.
Did I miss something? Is Barack Obama a "centrist"? When did THAT happen?flip-flop wrote: I would have voted Republican but if McCain had presented a centrist.
The man is the most liberal member of the Senate. He walks in lockstep with domestic terrorists, communists, anarchists, and he supports infanticide. Oh, and he trained for and represented in court one of the most devious political organizations in the country.
What would you say about McCain or Palin if they launched their first political campaigns in the home of Timothy McVeigh? Or, someone who bombed an abortion clinic? Worse yet, lets say that person has admitted to the fine work they did, and 40 years later said "I only wish we had bombed more abortion clinics"?
You won't answer my question because the answer is uncomfortable for you, and the answer requires a little intellectual honesty.

Just a few observations: Why is it that abortion and same-sex marriage are made into political issues? There aren't any political choices here. These are religious issues that can only be individually reconciled based on your beliefs. Our beliefs are specifically protected by our Constitution. Somehow they have been converted into contentious political issues that everyone feels compelled to argue about while nothing really changes!
soxfan22: I admire you for your willingness to stick to your right-wing guns, but your verbatim recantation of the Hannity mantra gets old real fast and does your otherwise fiery nature a huge dis-service. Over the top, ridiculous attack statements (who freakin cares about Bill Ayers or Rev Wright?) simply causes people to close their minds to you.
If one wants to, you can bog down any candidate with vague, open ended, guilt by association type of attacks but it erodes your credibility. It's been nothing but a downhill slide for the Republicans since the "Contract With America". They've now finger-pointed themselves into irrelevance. It's sad in a way, because we lose some balance in the process. Perhaps they will learn this lesson. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting. Didn't they read the "Little Boy Who Cried Wolf"?
This close to the election, I have to say that I'm still undecided. I can't decide whether to vote for Obama, Mickey Mouse or simply abstain. There are some things I like about McCain and the Republican platform in general. They just haven't focused on any of those things in this election and the Palin choice was the icing on the cake. I did have the thought that somewhere along Karl Rove called the McCain campaign and said, "You guys are toast. Let's groom Palin to run against Hillary in 2012 or we'll get clobbered again then." Or maybe not.... McCain should have picked Lieberman if he was really talking about change. The Republicans won't change until they learn to tell the far-right "NO!".
I'm also skeptical about Obama and giving the Dems all the power in Washington. The far-lefties are completely blind to anything but there own wacky ideals. I find it difficult at times to figure out which far-wing is more obstinate and unwilling to budge. When I hear Pelosi, Murtagh, Reid and crew get going on a topic I can tell the blinders have been put on and common sense won't enter the discussion. While I don't feel Obama is in quite the same far-left league as his contemporaries, I am concerned about their influence.
I can't wait until the election is over and we can all get back to friendlier island related conversations. I applaud everyone for being fairly respectful and for being honest. Some have you have shown great courage in engaging in this discussion. Others have shown great wisdom for deciding to stay out of it.....
Peace,
Cid

No, we will not answer your question because it is not an honest request for information. Your dogmatic rants suggest a demagogue with no original ideas of your own. The devisive vocabulary like communists and anarchists tell me that you are only interested inflaming the debate rather than seeking and real solutions. References to infanticide are clearly to distort the issues rather than persuade others to a particular point of view.soxfan22 wrote:The man is the most liberal member of the Senate. One of the things I learned in high school US History class was that the political spectrum it not a straight line at all. It is a circular form. When one goes to either the left or right they get further from the so-called "center" of the spectrum. If one goes too far to either side of the spectrum they actually meet the other point of view on the opposite side of the circle. Was there really any difference between Hitler and Stalin? Be careful. You are about to head closer to the "center." This time you will be on the other side of the circle from where you are accustomed to being.

WOW, just returned from a leisurely weekend get away and when I left this was only 2 pages long. You folks have not been relaxing on the weekends like you should be.
I thought you were St. John folks...remember, like to relax on the beach and enjoy an occassional adult beverage or two? Maybe you should enjoy a third!
Hey, the waiting game is almost over. Hang in there with your beliefs, but keep the Peace.
P.S. We passed Obama's motor pool heading south on I-25 today as we were headed home to the north. No traffic snarls! That is a plus! Oh, and his RV was not marked at all. We just knew that he was in Ft. Collins and would be travelling south at some point this afternoon.

Ok, I'm going to post a long tirade. To start with, a politically informed person does not have to be a conservative or a liberal, and moderates are the real silent majority of this great country.
Sox Fan your arguments have a constantly nasty tone and I would say the same thing if you were arguing a liberal perspective with the same attitude.I've kept silent regarding your comments up until now, but you have gotten personal to a point of being out of bounds with the majority of people on this board. You come across as a mindless parrot just spewing out rhetoric that you hear on talk radio.
Conservatives! What great inspirational financial geniuses they are! These are the low-lifes that claim some mythical "free-market" should decide the fate of the economy and that the government has little or no role to play as referee. Why? Because they don't want anything or anybody to stand between them and their money.
Now they come to their lap dogs in Congress demanding a bailout! This bailout goes against everything conservatives say that they stand for. Any claim to a philosophical underpinning to the conservative agenda is just pure bull manure. They don't believe any of their own rhetoric and they never have. They fought the New Deal, even when banks were refusing to open their doors to their depositors because they had squandered all of their depositors money. They really fought the New Deal when it contained anti- lynching legislation. They have pushed for eugenics even up to 20 years ago. They fought rural electrification in the '30's.
Conservatives don't believe in a free press, fair elections, equal education, environmental protection, safe and affordable health care, equal rights for women, any of it.
So what do conservatives believe in? Getting rich and paying no taxes. Period! Do they believe in a free market? There's no such thing and the upper crust conservatives know it.The premise is simple, a free market will decide in a brutal Darwinian fashion, who succeeds and who will fail. But as long as moneyed interests can go to government and get themselves declared unaccountable for their crimes, mismanagement and malfeasance there can be no free market. The rules of the marketplace are too easily manipulated, changed or simply not enforced. The Free Market concept is as Utopian and unworkable an idea as Marxism, and for the same reason, too much power in too few hands. And now we a war that has no explanation for existing in the first place that has cost America 565 billion dollars, or $1721 for every person in this country. Putting a yellow ribbon on your SUV stating your support for the troops doesn't really do much to help pay for it. Neither does not paying taxes. And good old maverick John McCain said in the first debate he would freeze all government spending, except of course, for the military, because the one trillion dollars a year we give to the military, various intelligence agencies and the arms industry just isn't enough. Feel safe yet?
And now these carpetbaggers, thieves, warmongers, and heretics are demanding the better part of another trillion dollars from the taxpayers to bail them out of their own self-made financial crises! It would be funny if it weren't so damned tragic!

When you find yourself in a hole.... quit digging.
Yep, a family member was the manager on duty at St. Regis Resort in Dana Point when AIG had their big BASH shortly after their bailout. Our hard earned tax dollars at work. All of our tax dollars...those earning over and under $250/k. Think about it folks.
Okay...I'm still on weekend vacation and won't get into this...off to relax.
