Mini trip to NYC

Hi, Just returned from NYC for 2 days, we went so I can take a look around at the Photo Plus expo. A lot of neat toys that I wish I could afford. I dragged my husband with me, he was bored at the expo but we ended up having a great time that night. We stayed at the Sheraton in Times Square, on Starwood points. As we were having a drink, I was trying to figure out what to do that night, my husband who always said he would never go to a Broadway play said to me, Jeremy Pivan is in a new show that opened the night before called "Speed-the-Plow. He read a review in USA Today and said he world go if I could get tickets.( Mel loves him in "Entourage" on HBO) I went to the hotel and they were able to find two tickets for me at the last minute! I paid a lot for them $149.00 each. I have never been to a show before, so I was excited. If you like Entourage, you will love him in this show, it was about two Hollywood executives. A dark comedy about Morals. We had a great time and even had all the actors sign my PlayBill at the end of night. Even "Mrs. Arie" was there to support Jeremy Pivan. What a great night! Even my husband, loved it! Hopefully in the future we can go back and see more of New York City.

Glad you enjoyed your trip to our neck of the woods! NYC is indeed a wonderful city--and Speed the Plow is a great play--how lucky you were to see it!

Hey All New Yorkers...

I'm considering a trip to the city next year with my wife and kids, been doing a little research...but would love to hear about any good travel forums, web sites...etc...etc...travel trips for NYC with kids.

How timely - I'll be in NYC with the hubby and one of the two sons this coming weekend. My husband is running in the NYC marathon. I doubt we'll make it to a play, but we are looking forward to doing lots of sightseeing while there.

Take a tour of Arthur Avenue in the Bronx....the REAL LIttle Italy. It's a not to be missed outing.

When in town, always check with the TKTS booth to see if there are same day half price tickets available for Broadway and off-Broadway shows.

The newly renovated Times Sq location now takes credit cards (had been cash only). Strategy is to do a little homework and pick out 2-4 shows you might be interested in and go there early to see whats available. Sometimes you really luck out - we got 11th row seats for The Producers and similar for Spamalot a few yrs ago.
Tough to get half price tix to top shows during upcoming holiday season, but post Xmas slow season you can score good shows.

Hey, just an FYI....the TKTS booth at the SOUTH STREET SEAPORT opens at 11 a.m., several hours BEFORE the TKTS booth in Times Square.

Another fun adventure is A Slice of Brooklyn (www.asliceofbrooklyn.com). It's a pizza tour through Brooklyn with lots of anecdotes/scenery thrown it. Yummo! Very worthwhile.

Additionally, take a culinary tour through SoHo and/or Chinatown. You'll be amazed and stuffed! Top notch outings. Google culinary tours+NYC for info.

I love NY.

Good point Jamestown.
Website says same day matinee performances available at Times Sq Wednesdays and Saturdays 10am - 2pm, and same day evening performances are available starting at 3pm, but the Seaport has same-day evening and next day matinee performances available starting at 11am.

gotta chime in here.
pizza.......lots of folks rave about Grimaldi's (and I love it--super excellent pizza without a huge slog into brooklyn) --it's basically under the bridge--up the street from the River Cafe--when the water taxi is running a great part of the day is to walk over the bridge, grab lunch at grimaldi's ten take the water taxi to the west side--along the way they'll buzz the statue of liberty and you can go all they way up to the intrepid sea and space museum-which is back at it's port after undergoing a huge renovation .
But the holy Grail according to those who are true pizza afficionados
is DiFara's in the midwood section of Brooklyn (ave J)
other top spots (you can eat great pizza for every meal for days in this city!)
frannys in park slope, johns on bleeker street (manhattan) patsy's in manhattan pizza suprema on 8th ave, and totonos....

Now I wish I had asked before leaving, this trip was totally last minute. I booked everything the day I was leaving. We want to go back when we have more time to spend exploring. One thing I really enjoyed was walking around Times Square, if you have kids, they will love it. There is a store called M&M World, a store totally dedicated to the candy, 3 levels. It was a lot of fun and shopped for gifts for my new great nephew. Also, if you have trouble getting tickets to shows, our hotel really came through for us. It was 5:00pm when I asked for tickets, we got the last 2 available. You pay more of course, but it was worth it. Can't wait to go back.
