I'll be on St John next April for my daughter's wedding. I'm an avid photographer and my question concerns tripods. It is really a hassle to bring a tripod along on a flight, so I'm wondering what my strategy should be. Do I ship one down and live with the hassle of bringing it on the flight home or is there somewhere on St John or St Thomas where I can rent one or buy a cheap one when I get there?

Hi Rickst - Congradulations on your daughter's wedding next year. Being a StJ photographer I love using my tripods too. When I travel I use a Velbon Sherpa with a small Manfrotto ball head (need a good reducing coupler) that I detach. This fits into my 21" wheeled carry on bag where my camera and clothing goes. You can definately buy a tripod locally from one of the StT camera stores, even Radio Shack sells them. They are typically a Targus brand (no quick release plates) in the $20-30 price range. Not a bad deal since the sand at the beach does require quite a bit of maintenance on the higher price tripods. Best wishes, Bob
PS - If you're taking photos of your daughter's wedding for her do make sure you study-up/practice with the unique lighting conditions that you'll encounter down here.

I want a Joby GP1-01EN Gorillapod Flexible Tripod (Grey) (found it on Amazon).
I have a mini tripod that is a little like a bean bag on the bottom with a place to screw in the camera on top. It works well but the Gorillapod is so much better. I have found with my bean bag one that I need to have something to sit it on that is at the right height and angel. With the Gorillapod I can wrap the legs around something and don't need something to sit it on. It is on my wish list.
I can't find my bean bag thing so . . . I guess I will just have to order the gorillapod!! Darn.
