If you are gonna stay on island for the storm...

and are gonna have a hurricane party. Do it the right way and make up a batch of hurricanes...

Hurricane

1.5 ounces light rum
1.5 ounces dark rum
1 ounce orange juice
1 ounce fresh lime juice (NOT Rose's or RealLime)
1/4 cup passion fruit juice, or 1 tablespoon passion fruit syrup
1 teaspoon superfine sugar
1 teaspoon grenadine
Cherries with stems, and orange slice to garnish
Ice cubes

In a cocktail shaker, mix the rum, passion fruit juice or syrup, the other juices and the sugar until sugar is dissolved. Add the grenadine, and stir to combine, then add ice and shake. Half-fill a hurricane glass with ice, then strain drink into glass; add ice to fill. Garnish with orange slice and cherries.

Or you can go this route...

Hurricane Recipe:

2 oz light rum
2 oz dark rum
2 oz passion fruit juice
1 oz orange juice
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
1 Tablespoon simple syrup
1 Tablespoon grenadine

Garnish: orange slice and cherry
Shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and strain into a Hurricane glass filled with ice. Garnish with a cherry and an orange slice

I wish; although, I have had enough hurricanes (not the drink) for the summer that I don't wish to be anywhere near the islands right now.

The reason they are called hurricanes is because they are traditionally served in a glass that looks like a hurricane lamp.

I would try mango juice if you have that. There is already alot of citrus flavor so that won't help. It will change the flavor, but might work.

Good LUCK! and I hope you all safely ride out Omar.

That's exactly what I was thinking. So I tried it, and it turned out ok, but I turned it into a frozen drink and it's much better. I guess after all this madness I will have to try to find passion fruit juice to keep on hand. Thanks. :)

Might want to go slow on those if you want to continue with the updates. I'll tell you about my afternoon at Pat O'Briens next time we see each other. Just trust me on this one for now.

You don't have to tell me about hurricanes at Pat O'Briens, I probably have a similar story. They're dangerous! :D

Deb, is Jay back yet? Are you drinking alone? I thought you were waiting for his return to start your hurricane party :)

Stay safe!

It would have put me over the edge too. If I wasn't at work, I'd be drinking with you too :) I hope she joins you and Jay returns home soon.

I know it's probably too late regarding the passion fruit substitute...you can use Hawaiian Punch or Red Kool Aid or I found this recipe:

1 oz vodka
1/4 oz grenadine syrup
1 oz gin
1 oz light rum
1/2 oz Bacardi® 151 rum
1 oz amaretto almond liqueur
1 oz triple sec
grapefruit juice
pineapple juice

I have also seen people substitute mango or papaya juice as others on here suggested.

The thing about hurricanes is that they are so sweet that you don't realize how much alcohol you are drinking, and just one will knock your socks off

I guess, mrscaptainjay, that it's good you are probably only wearing flip-flops
