hey Jen! Stay dry! Looking forward to your updates! And as weird as this may sound, I'm jealous of you guys! Wish we were still there to round out the whole experience....earthquake to Tropical storm indeed! :)

Be safe and I hope it all passes quickly so you can get out to the beaches.

And to all of you STJ & STT folks, I hope it'll just be a bunch of rain to fill your cisterns! Take care you guys!

Like Randy...we just returned from Dolphin...flashlight... batteries...chow...and rum...of course! Definitely starting to look like an interesting couple of days. We are used to sunny March...this is certainly a change of pace for us!!! Monsoon rain...earthquake and hurricane in the same week...we'll see! Still beats the best day at work!!! We'll try to keep you updated...

Somehow I thought you'd end up playing with Chad and Todd. Dark & Stormy?

Piscesgirl, June and July are in Hurricane season, which runs June 1 through November 30 in the Atlantic.

Stay safe, everyone -- the end is near. In a *good* way!

Cat

Yes, but hurricane season doesn't start getting "active" until late August early September.
Stay safe...according to the weather channel it will start clearing up tomorrow afternoon...the sun seems to really shine after a good storm...the weekend will probably be beautiful!

Latest prediction is Omar to be at, or near hurricane strength as it crosses the VI's. Not good.

HA! RG...you know us too well! I left the Pre-Omar Woody's party to gear up for the Pre-Omar pool party...begins 3:30...ish! The boys are grillin' a pork loin and shrimp on the barby. I'm whippin' up some garlic mashed...roasted veggies...& a tossed salad with my top-secret red wine & cider vinaigrette. One loaf each of still warm Starfish Bakery sourdough and French baguette! We're not  afraid! Bring it on!

We bet the house on the tri-fecta! Earthquake...Monsoon Rain & Hurricane...all within five days of each other! Nice!!!

Sarah...funny you should say! My husband is like a kid in a candy store! He's always wanted to be on island for a storm! Looks like he may get his wish! I'm actually pretty hip with it...as long as it doesn't get to bad! :? Sissy...I know!

Definitely the calm before the storm...at least in town anyway! Saw the sun peek through the clouds this morning for a brief appearance while we were at JJ's...the most we've seen since we arrived Friday night! Almost thought we were going to have a beach day. By the time we made our grocery & battery run...the sun was gone and the POP was back on!

My cousin and his wife are supposed to fly out 2mo. We'll see how that goes. The storm is actually moving very slowly...like 2mph! That may work in their favor. They may get out just in time. Their plane is supposed to leave PR at 3:50pm 2mo afternoon. Judd called the airline this morning to inquire about changing his flight to Thursday. The gal advised him to make his flight if at all possible. All of the flights yet today and those the rest of the week are all packed. She said if they don't take their scheduled flight...it would be days before they could reschedule. They'll call in the morning and see where things stand.

As for the rest of us...the slow moving storm may not be such good news. Just more time for it to organize. Like I said...I'm hip as long as it doesn't get too bad!

The bathtubs are full. The storm shutters are going up. We have plenty of drinking water. Two brand new flashlights. Two new books. Plenty of ice. Plenty of Coke. Plenty of Maker's Mark...and of course...plenty of rum! How bad can it get??? Bustin' out the ipod and gettin' ready for Omar!!!

More updates if interesting and/or able!

aroobagirl, you're right! On the Chocolate hole web cam, you can barely see the outline of St. Thomas. I'm surprised those boats are in still in the water there (after the beating they took in the last storm). Cruz Bay looks pretty cleared out of boats but there are a few left.

I hope that all stay safe in this upcoming storm.

Have been talking with some of my meterological friends and I think we all agree that later this could be very rough. I will not give my personal take on the weather maps, but will urge each of you down there to keep a close eye out for changing weather situations.

Randy....I hope you have enough rum on hand :)

Today was not too bad until about 30 minutes ago. We saw the sun, the rain held off...but they did cancel all public schools for the day. I would imagine the same will go for tomorrow, possible day after tomorrow. The REAL problem with the storm is the rain we are going to get. We will surely see some flooding and the roads will be a mess. There are already several new BIG potholes in the roads from Sunday's rain.

This time of year seems to always be the most iffy for us. In my 9 years here it seems that most of our weather trouble happens in mid October to mid November. My first year here hurricane Lenny hit on November 17th (1999). Two other years we had tons and tons of rain during this time frame.

And yes!!! What do you do when it rains? Drink! The last things to close before a storm and the first things to open after a storm are the bars. Just be careful when driving!

Took another drive into town this afternoon for more supplies and I now feel we've done everything we can to be ready. Now it's up to Omar. There seems to be a wide range of opinion on-island as to how serious this might be. A couple of people I talked to at St. John Hardware seemed to think we are just in for a lot of rain. Others are very concerned. One of our live-aboard friends in Coral Bay has just decided to move to Hurricane Hole. Our biggest dilemma was how to shutter ourselves into our bedroom when the shutters close from the outside. Through a series of bungee cords I think I've solved the problem. All the hard to reach shutters are up and closed. We'll close up everything else in the main house and bungee ourselves in the bedroom if/when the time comes. The humidity seems to be increasing, and the skeeters seem to be more hungry than usual, if that's possible. Stay tuned...

Wow, sending good thoughts to everyone down in the VI's and Puerto Rico. It appears you are in for a time in the next couple of days. We were just there October 3rd-11th, and had weather so perfect it was freaky (except for our departure day when we had both earthquake and tropical wave). I've seen pools with more wave action than the ocean while we were there. We were out on the water a couple of days and the phrase "calm before the storm" felt so apt that I said it out loud. I'm sorry my very trite prediction came true. Wishing you guys the best as you ride this thing out.

As you (might) know, I am here in Kansas City - just had an update from hubby and after checking all the weather sites the "new" expected strength is now a Cat 2 or 3 :(

Wish I was home with everyone :(

Be safe and talk later.

We're thinking about our STJ friends here in Kentucky. Be safe and take care of yourselves.
