Earthquake?
I was there
I'm home tonight, but this morning was our last on the island. I was up early, in the bathroom of our villa just after 6:30 AM. I thought it was a very large truck at first, but then the roof starting rattling in a strange way and I noticed all of the mirrors and pictures were jangling against the wall. It was actually pretty cool, not scary at all. By the time I could think, "should I head outside or take cover?", the thing was over.
I think the study of tektonic plate boundaries along with the recorded earthquake density suggests activity is expected along the line of the islands from Trinidad all the way to PR and DR...kind of like California, in my mind anyway...

Thank you Ron. I felt sort of silly, not knowing that earthquakes could hit the Virgin Islands. I guess it was more a matter of no really thinking about it. I am glad there was no real damage. After all, 6.1 is a pretty severe quake! We will be there for Thanksgiving week, and know I will be watching for the first hint of anything now. I am terrified of earthquakes, never been near an earthquake. I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and migrated to the DC suburbs of MD with my family as a teen. I can handle tornados and hurricanes, but quakes frighten me. Here's hoping...

Hey, what are you doing at the Westin? Did you switch from Caneel?SusanNJ wrote:woke up during our stay at the westin
I am glad everybody is OK! There was an earthquake when we were there in June 06, I think it was only a 2.0 but I was seriously freaked out! I am not good with earthquakes, not at all.

Ron - thank you so much for the link - that was interesting.
mcpenguin5 - I used to say the same as you about hurricanes, but you know what, I am so tired of being stressed out wondering whether or not it's coming our way or not (which lasts at least a week) that I am starting to think that at least with earthquakes, you don't know they are coming then they are over pretty quickly. Tornadoes on the other hand, scare the $hit out of me.
I swear I think I get greyer and greyer every hurricane season...but no, I am NOT leaving

I guess I don't really have room to say I don't worry about hurricanes. I'm too far inland to deal with the real brunt of it. I have witnessed the effects of several that hit here, but we never get the devestation that hits coastal areas. Mostly just flooding, streets closed, trees and power lines down. Our lives aren't really in danger, and unless a tree lands on it or we get flooded, our houses remain safe. I see your point.nothintolose wrote:
