Speaking of Dogs...

I had a beagle growing up so I know exactly what I am getting myself into. She loved to play but she also loved to lay around and sleep.

Plus we have over an acre (practically an estate in Northern VA) so the howling/barking will only annoy us. Butter is a barker so maybe they'll cancel each other out. We also are lucky enough to have a creek. Do beagles like water? Butter would live in the creek if we let her.

My hope is that the 4 children (two twoleggeds and two 4 leggeds) will wear each other out while I rest on the sofa

From everything we read while researching beagles, they generally do not like the water. But, there are exceptions, depending on the individual dog. We live on a lake, but have not introduced Butkus to the water yet. Maybe this weekend. I'll report back. He does like his baths, though. Maybe that's a good sign.

We are extremely happy that we got a beagle...and that we got Butkus. While he can be a bundle of energy, he's also very sweet and really likes to cuddle.

Go on...get the puppy.

But reason #9 has now made me want a puppy more than I normally do.

I LOVE when beagles and other hounds bay - it's one of those traits the hounds have that sets them apart from other types of dogs

I find they bay more if left outside all day than if they are inside pets.

Flip-flop, you KNOW you are gonna get the pup so go ahead and admit it and bring that wee one home as soon as it's old enough (O:

Oh my goodness!! You "guys" are bringing me back to my childhood because we always had beagles. My Dad was a hunter so that was his choice. I can still remember how soft and warm their ears were and how their tummies were so chubby!

Aaawww I want one too!

I just love those photos of the lil' cuties and Butkus is pretty darn proud looking.

Just remember they follow their noses and can howl more than you may want, but other than that a great family pet.

Oh, almost forgot;

what's her name?

Oh my gosh, you nailed it...his ears are so soft! And, you're right about the nose. Our walks around the block take an hour because he stops every minute or so to check out some smell that must be very, very interesting to him.

People think I am nuts when I say that the ears are my favorite parts of dogs, but they have so much expression in them and beagle ears are so long and velvety!

Interesting fact, hound dogs' ears hanso long because they help when they are tracking a scent. Their ears also pick of the smells and circulate back to their noses. The only bad thing about those long floppy ears is that they are prone to yeast infections because they tend to hold the moisture in (same with lab ears too).

Now that ya'll have all of that info, I guess you can go on with your day

I can't wait to see pics of the mini-flip-flops with their new pup!!!

FF, I'm going to share my "story of the week" with you. We have a 10 lb. little dog (LD) and a 70 lb. (BD) who have always been best buddies. They even room together in the same run when we're out of town. To make a long story short, the BD bit the LD on Monday night and broke her leg.

It's been quite an ordeal, emotionally and financially. We're pretty sure LD will heal without surgery, but nothing's 100% yet. I'm so tired right now from taking care of her, I can hardly think. She wakes up at night crying, I carry her outside to potty, give her meds, etc.

I'm not saying don't get the pup, cause she sure is cute. And I know you all would love her and give her a great home. But after this week, and if hindsight were 20-20, I wouldn't have chosen dogs who are so mismatched in size.

I love beagles, too, and she's definitely a cutie-pie.
