Silly question for the girls..

My only thing about white in general is getting my ass dirty-- because inevitably I'm the one that happens to.

The old "white" rules no longer apply in the fashion arena and are more driven by locality as it relates to weather and temps than anything else. What matters is the weight of the fabric and how you dress it up or down. Light flimsy stuff is for summer, the heavier twills and cottons are for fall and spring.

The same applies to white shoes. The coverage should be temp appropriate. IOW a pair of white Tory Burch flats paired with fall colors (olives and browns and accessorized) can work. But of course wearing white flip flops when it's 40 degrees outside is a bit impractical. Although these days the Abercrombie and Fitch/Hollister/college crowd seem to wear flip flops year round.

All this being said when we visit STJ in December I will bring plenty of white and fun colors!!

White T shirts are ok. So are white turtlenecks (for winter) and after labor day.

I'm really stating to wonder where this came from. I know I got it from my Mom, but who made the rules?

Hey Connie,
My Mom taught me the same thing. I pretty much always followed it except for some "Winter white". Then when I moved to the sub-tropics I kinda forgot all about it.
I say "kinda" forgot about it...but I must confess a co-worker of mine was back up to the Jersey shore a couple weeks back and bought a knock-off purse at some flea market and it's white...I thought to myself WHY did she buy white, it's Fall now

So I guess I still do think about it now and then

OK Ladies,
Not only can you wear white all year long...the other "new rule" is NEVER wear panty hose...yes even in January when it is 20 degrees. Really shows your age!!! Almost the same as wearing pantyhose with open toe shoes

I used to work at a company where it was REQUIRED for all the women to wear panty hose!!

Can you even believe that? Needless to say, I wasn't there for very long!

I'm okay with pantyhose, in the winter months. Or, more fun, silk stockings with a garter belt.

You know what IS ugly? White pantyhose. Ewwwwww. Now that shows age.

True story about hose:
Way back in the day (1940) when my Mom was in college, women were required to wear hose. My mom and her friends hated to wear them in the warm months (St. Louis, hot, hot, hot even in the fall when school started) so they would take an eyebrow pencil and draw a line down the back of each other's legs to make it look like they were in hose.

Tomorrow is my Mom's 86th birthday. Little rebel.

For winter the new rule is opaque tights to replace pantyhose.

Personally I LOVE this trend. VERY slimming and comfy. I alwys feel like I can wear dresses and shorter skirts while still covering up!

Or labor day is the first monday of Sept. So women aren't suppose to wear white from then till spring. kind of dumb.

Oh man, tomorrow I planned to wear white bobby sox with white patent leather shoes for work, with a white eyelet blouse - now what will I wear? I wonder what the boys are wearing? Oh yeah - flourescent yellow shirts in all seasons!!!

I know, I grew up with those rules too, but now that Moms eyesight is starting to deteriorate, she won't know and I won't be sent back to my room to change. Maybe I'll wear striped bell bottoms with a checked shirt - which she would also put a stop to! Eyes in the back of her head - she'll always know!

Who were the fashion nazis' that dictated this stuff? And how did they get the word out to everyone without the internet?

I wonder who came up with this too. I was also taught not to wear white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day, and I still have a problem with it. Even though I know it is no longer a rule, and it is still warm here I put away my white. My mother even questions me when I wear light khaki shorts.
Now, on vacation anywhere warm I will wear white ... shorts, jeans, skirt, whatever.
