Great shots from that Canon! Yes, Lucy is fabulous -- she ran the snorkel concession at Caneel for decades until she retired, and they still want her to come back! Anyone who ever gets the chance at a trip with her, you will get a great tour -- she knows where to go and exactly what you're looking at.

Speaking of finding alternate routes...Living in Dallas, we always fly from DFW to STT through Miami or San Juan, PR on American...no matter how far in advance we try to book, that's always a pretty expensive flight and I've heard a cheaper alternative is to buy a ticket only to San Juan, PR (becau...

Yes, AT&T and Sprint are the two providers where you will not be charged extra fees here as long as you are on their networks. Verizon, T-Mobile, etc. users will automatically be roaming. iPhones are becoming very popular here. There is pretty good AT&T 3G coverage over most of the island. I...

ExitZero is right; there's no STX to STJ ferry. Unless you want to spend part of your vacation on STX as well, there's no reason to do this. It would add significantly to your costs and travel time compared with flying in to STT.

When you buy a ticket on an airline, you pay for a certain amount of space. When an obese person cannot physically fit in the space they paid for, they have to take some of yours. It's not discrimination to be upset when someone takes away something you paid for! :?

Great trip report! Thanks for sharing; sounds like a wonderful time. Here are a couple of tips that might help you out next time you visit (or help someone else in the interim): * There is indeed transportation from Coral Bay after 4 p.m. -- the bus. It's supposed to run hourly until at least 7 or 8...

They've been closed at the Crazy Crackers location for a little while now; word is only just getting around. The Surly owners had significant financial differences with the CC owners. I won't go into she-said he-said, but let's just say that knowing how to make good food and knowing how to run a pro...

Your gonna get wet in the water so whats a little rain gonna hurt? Weeeeell.... when a serious storm comes through, they shut down the ports -- you could have the adventure of being stuck on STT or STJ, paying extra for accommodations, while you wait for them to reopen so you can get on with arrivi...

Well, people take the rented kayaks all over the place, so I don't see why it would be different for any of the other equipment they rent -- but better to check with them to make sure. Let us know what you find out!

Just make sure you book travel insurance in case you have to cancel or shorten your trip due to weather (and check its limitations carefully). Otherwise, come and enjoy a quiet, less expensive island vacation!

Count on containers getting popped open and broken, then. I have a soft-sided bag that I love (Rick Steves' Convertible Carry-On, which works as a backpack as well as regular luggage). I pack it in my hard bag on trips to the states and use it as my extra bag on the way back home to STJ. On my last ...

I wouldn't pack food in a soft-sided bag, except maybe granola -- the baggage handling will smash the heck out of whatever you put in there. Check with your airline about any restrictions they have with checking cardboard boxes.

Often, when a visitor to our island is being unusually rude, it has to do with alcohol lowering inhibitions. Locals are very used to drunk people and "culturally unaware" tourists, and we live a low-stress life because that stuff doesn't faze us. Most people come and have a good, relaxing ...

Yes, it's busier every year because there are more people on the planet. Now go away! :P

Just kidding, but I do encourage folks to come during shoulder or hurricane season if they are looking for deserted beaches. It ain't gonna happen between December and April.

It's the latest incarnation of a bar where Pickles Deli used to be -- on your right before the gas station. Owen and his girlfriend Hannah are sweet folks; stop in and enjoy a drink or two. Inner Visions plays there some nights also.
