Re: Beach Bar
Definitely sucks...especially when you consider that the Beach Bar could probably set up shop temporarily on the beach in front of their old spot with a simple tent, a few folding tables, some chairs and blender run off a car battery and people would still flock there in droves.

Re: Just back from STT and STJ - 2/28-3/5
Thanks, Rick...great to know, we'll look them up in June...and I like the concept behind Pelican Beach villa. It's kind of like a private all-inclusive resort for two. And I love that they have a boat that they can just take you on a BVI trip from their front door. That's really cool.

Re: Just back from STT and STJ - 2/28-3/5
Very cool, Rick, thanks for the info...BTW, I met Leslie and Steve a while back and always lauded and envied them for making the move to paradise. And that Pelican Beach villa looks awesome. How are they associated with it? We'll be staying in a villa within walking distance of that beach in June an...

Re: Any News on Aqua Bistro
We just booked a villa near AB in Coral Bay and the owner of the villa said he thought they'd be open again really soon. I also saw this in a restaurant update post on News of St John... "Aqua Bistro – Food and drink – expected to open sometime in Feb." Obviously it's March now and I haven...

Re: 2018 Roll Call
Seriously, is there a better feeling than hitting purchase on your flights to STT with a confirmed villa booking in hand? Boom. We're back, Baby! Very excited if you can't tell. Be there in mid June, staying in Coral Bay, got a 2D hard top from our friends the Suttons. Of particular note, I don't kn...

Re: 2018 Roll Call
My wife and I and our two kids are trying to figure out a way back this June...currently looking for villas. We love STJ and realized the things we love most - hikin', limin' and snorkelin' - are still very much available and will probably be even more so by this June...we figure as long as we can r...

Re: Oh the changes in St. John from 8 years ago...
Been doing a lot of thinking about this topic and also have posted several thoughts on the other forum but thought I'd add here as I have a ton of respect for the people who frequent this forum and appreciate their opinions... I've been going to STJ since 2003 and have had the good fortune to visit ...

Re: new property tax proposal
Thanks all for the added context and Brian, that was what I was getting at with my question with regard to the potential increase... And agree with you all that it will most likely price some people out...I know that when we look at villas with our friends, we're looking for a daily rate of about $4...

Re: new property tax proposal
For those of us who thought there would be no math...can someone help explain how this affects the average STJ villa renter on a more granular level? I know that last time we rented, there was a 10% room tax added, so $350 on top of a villa priced at $3,500 for the week. (Sounds like that room tax i...

Re: One night on STT ?
No personal experience with this one but in the future, if we need one night on STT, we're going to try this Green Iguana Hotel...seen a lot of good reviews for it. http://www.thegreeniguana.com/ We've also done the Emerald Beach next to the airport and for the limited time we were there and the fac...

Re: been a while!
Adding to the above... Miss Lucy's still serves a mean Grouper Reuben and has Sunday brunch and full moon parties. Unfortunately, Tourist Trap is no more and neither is Sweet Plantains. Where Sweet Plantains used to be is a place called Skipper Britts...don't know much about it other than I hear Aug...

Re: April
By no means scientific, but from reading this and other STJ forums over the last 10 years, it does seem like there's a week or two every year around the end of April, start of May when the amount of rain the island gets is more than usual. I typically read posts like yours about lack of sun or the m...

Re: 1:05 Layover in Miami?
Ha! More like a mooring these days. 50th trip looks like a work trip in the boatyard for September. I'll be looking a lot more Kirk than Kenny after scraping and painting De Life's bottom. Cheers, RickG Hey, at least you're living "De Life" right. Good on ya. Heading back for Trip 9 in Ju...

Rick, don't they name a bay after you on your 50th trip to STJ? Or at least a street?

Re: 1:05 Layover in Miami?
Agree with the others...I'd go for the 2 hour layover. Not only does it give you a little extra cushion if your flight from Chi is delayed (which would not be unheard of in Feb), but it also increases the likelihood that your checked bag makes it to the next plane and Miami airport is fun - get a Mo...
