OK, I googled Butter Hamlet, Mahogany Snapper, and Lane Snapper. The Butter Hamlet has a black spot at the base of the tail that your photo does not. The Lane Hamlet has no black spot on the side, your photo does. The Mahogany Snapper has a black spot in exactly the same place as your photo. I belei...

Why carry on only?

The only times my luggage has NOT been lost were the times I did carry-on only.

Every time I have checked luggage, something has gotten delayed/lost on either the to or from part of the trip. I have a luggage jinx. If I can't carry it with me, it doesn't go.

A lesson in biting insect terminology. Here it is, clear as mud: Chiggers are tiny, almost micoscopic red mites. Their eggs are laid in vegetation. The larva hatch, climb vegetation, then drop onto a host passing by. They feed on the skin for several days, then drop off to complete their life cycle ...

I was in the Bahamas in December and got a lot of noseeum bites on the day before we left. I could feel them at the time they were biting, but didn't really have much in the way of visible bites that day or the next. I remember thinking they really weren't so bad. Several days after I returned home,...

I've been lurking (and posting very occasionally) since 2002. Guess that also makes me an "old timer."

You can expect high temperatures in the upper 80's, lows in the mid 70's and water temperatures in the low to mid 80's. There is always a chance of showers, but they are usually brief and localized. They provide welcome relief on a hot day, and if you prefer to stay dry you can simply move to anothe...

I should have been less vague - BWI is Baltimore. Yes, the fares do tend to fluctuate a lot. They are generally at their lowest about 4 - 6 weeks ahead of your travel date. Right now they are having their annual "Fall Fare Sale" and I got a one way to Fort Myers for $59.00 in early October...
