Any Must Do's
Hi
My wife and I are going back to St. John in 12 days after a long 5 year drought (kids). I've been in withdraw for a long time and am finally getting my St. John fix. Is there anything new that is a can't miss?

This may sound prett freakin' obvious, but don't get obsessed with a list of must-do things. We schedule a few things ahead: horseback riding when the kids are with us and a party-focused snorkel-focused daysail when we have the party-party group along.
When it's just the two of us, lazy days on the beach with lunch packed and more beers than we need seems to go nicely. Hitting The Beach Bar in mid-afternoon and playing Connect-4 until Michelle and April start looking at us with concern is always nearly-memorable/rememberable. Sitting on the rail at Quiet Mon and watching the people come and go. Beers with Donna bartending at Shipwreck Landing after Salt Pond Bay or Lameshur Bay. La Tapa is OUR favorite restaurant, Skinny Legs is OUR favorite lunch and Inner Visions is a treat when they are playing.
Have fun. Let us know what YOUR favorites are!!
Cheers, RickG

Completely agree agree with you. we have been to St. John a number of times also and we are usually in the same neighborhood as you. We pack a cooler for the beach, Corona or Caribe's for me and Captain and coke for my sun goddess, maybe some chips or snacks and we are off to Honeymoon, Hawksnest or Maho for the morning and after a while drive to Shipwreck Landing or Skinny's and then to Salt Pond etc. for the afternoon. On the trip back we stop in town at Woody's, Quiet-Mon or the Beach Bar and have a cocktail before heading to our vacation vista for a rest , shower and back to town for some dinner and fun. We're not the planning a day type, just seeing if you regulars found any new places in the last 5 yrs.
Thanks, Scott

Well, there is a new chef at Tage and he is supposed to be really good. Post about your meal if you eat there!
There's actually a bunch of new places to eat--Ocean Grill where Mongoose Restaurant used to be, off the top of my head.
Was the road to Lameshur paved when you were there last? The begnning is still dirt but all the switchbacks are paved now and you can drive out there easily.

It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

Happy for you to be returning after 5 years, that is a long time!!
One thing I think you'll need after 5 years is a little more patience behind the wheel. We first went 3 years ago, and just got back from our 4th trip about a month ago. The construction traffic on the roads has increased drastically since our 1st visit. Not just an increase in dump trucks and concrete trucks, but trailers with earth moving equipment. We accepted it and taught ourselves to be patient and wait. It was especially bad around the Westin where they are building a new office/retail complex. I really feel for those guys driving such equipment on those narrow windy roads!
There is a new place by the ferry dock called Harbor Grille or something like that. It's a good place to grab a cold drink and light food. We enjoyed, like others, sitting and watching the ferry traffic.
Have a WONDERFUL time, hope you'll post a trip report when you get back! I'll be anxious to hear your thoughts on the Island changes after a 5 year absence.

liamsaunt, just a side note...Ted has returned to Tage, so it should be back to business as usual there. I never got the chance to eat there while he was on hiatus, but I didn't hear anything spectacular about the food there during that time. Karl Foster, who took over while Ted was gone, is still at Tage, managing the place (I believe).

Hi All
I will definetly post a trip report when we get back. We don't have to go as far as the Westin so maybe we can avoid some of the new traffic but will see it since our transfers from the airport are through the Westin and we are coming over on their ferry instead of the one from Red Hook (a first for us). Thanks all, only 11 more days to go!

He's back? That is so great! Tage was our favorite place past trips, and we were really disappointed that he was gone and it was closed last summer.Andrea266 wrote:liamsaunt, just a side note...Ted has returned to Tage, so it should be back to business as usual there.
