Our honeymoon splurge!
Our honeymoon splurge!
Don't know if anyone recalls but before we went to STJ on our honeymoon I was asking about a location for some local wood crafting. Someone (I think liamsaunt) pointed me to Bajo el Sol Gallery in Mongoose Junction. We did find ourselves there one day and if you get the chance do stop there. Even if you aren't in the market for art it is really a lovely place to browse and Tom, the owner, is great to talk to. I found a piece I really liked the first day we were in there which I believe was our first or second full day on the island. I didn't make the purchase because I wanted to look around more before making such an investment. Needless to say we ended up back there on our last day and ended up with the piece I first admired. This isn't the first time I have made such a purchase on vacation. The t shirts and what not are good purchases as well but when I am some place special I prefer to buy art or jewlery to remind me of the place (um, in STJ I purchased both so I guess it was REALLY special!).
Had the piece framed and shipped home and it just arrived over the weekend. Took longer than expected for framing for which Tom was very apologetic. While waiting for it I did think to myself "hope I don't open the package and find out that "feeling" has worn off". But that didn't happen. It was well worth the wait and now I just need to get Charlie on the stick to hang it for me. Thought you'd like to see. I am so glad I will be able to look at this piece and be reminded of our beautiful honeymoon on St. John.

Mary Beth - That's a lovely painting and I really like the way it was framed in the "float" style. Having been a picture framer for 20 yrs. I recognize a nice frame job when I see it and even though I don't know what you paid for it, I'm thinking you got your money's worth in both "tangible" memories and "mental" memories

thanks! the float was KEY to the framing which is why I had it done there. They already had a lot of pieces done that way and I wanted to be sure it was done right. Hate to call myself "fussy" but I am and I did not select the actual frame myself - the artist did. But I really love it. The design of the frame almost puts me in mind of palm trees.
The artists name is Aimee ..... crud now I forgot her last name! I will have to go check the web site.

here she is. but I don't think it's the same girl as the turtle.
Aimee Trayser says that her paintings and collages are defined not so much by what we see but by the mystical quality of our dreams. Through the playful use of color and simplicity of form, she hopes to create a primitive and ethereal atmosphere in each piece.

MaryBeth, the painting is beautiful and I too like how it was framed in the floating style.
We have several STJ watercolors framed at home, and I always enjoy looking at them. Last year I picked up 4 more and had them framed for my sisters and parents as a Christmas gift to remind them of our family trip there in 2004.
Speaking of STJ art (sort of), I was crushed when I lost my hook bracelet about 4 months ago and think (hope) my hubby will put a new one under the tree for me this year. I'd like to actually GO there to pick up a new one, but that's not likely in the next year or two, so this will do fine.

The art work in your painting looks very much like the murals that were painted in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. I wonder if it is the same artist. I'll check it out next week. Tom and Livy who own the gallery are wonderful people. They are originally from Vermont. I stay in Livy's mom's condo very often and lots of her paintings are there. Congratulations are your purchase I'm sure that you will enjoy it for many years.

A painting is the best kind of splurge. It's beautiful. You will enjoy it forever.
We bought a painting at that gallery a few years back. It's not of anything islandy, but it's a beautiful, quiet, still-life of onions and jumbie seeds...by Deborah St. Claire. It's in my dining room and every time I look at it, I'm happy.
