Here in the Bluegrass State we have Black Strap Molasses which people eat on biscuits or other bread products. Since it is made from sorghum cane and rum is made from sugar cane, I would bet they are much the same. Black Strap Molasses has a very stong taste to it and is very, very dark.

Just to follow up--the Cruzan Rum website says "It is almost like a molasses-flavored rum." It also says it is good in Mai-Tais and "Tiki" drinks.

Hi

Our suggestion would be to make a “Dark and Stormy”, a favorite drink in the Caribbean that originated in Bermuda. To be absolutely authentic, you’d use Gosling’s (a dark Bermuda Rum) and Barritts Ginger Beer. Works just fine with other dark rums though. The official recipe is at www.goslingsrum.com/details.asp?RecipeID=192. Here it is :
1½ oz Gosling's Black Seal Rum
top with Barritts ginger beer
Garnish with lime (optional).
Getting ginger beer might be more of a problem. In our area, Saranac (made in Utica) is OK, but a very fine Ginger Beer is made by Goya (Jamaica Style) and is available (in our area, at least) at Wegman’s. A very strong ginger beer.

BTW, Cruzan Black Strap is just wonderful neat (like a brandy). You might like to try their Cane Rum as well, which is quite a bit like the Callwood's Cane Rum you get at Cane Garden Bay in Tortola. Both are pretty much a matter of personal taste (as usual).

Peace

I like to make my regular rum and coke and add just a splash of black strap to change the flavor up a little bit.

Blackstrap and Vanilla Coke. Period. Squeeze a big chunk of lime into the mix.
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

2 parts black rum, 1 part Roses Grenadine, and pineapple juice or crushed pineapple, or orange-pineapple juice, with or without a tiny splash of Vanilla, full glass of ice.

Would not be my first choice because of the black rum {we enjoy the Cruzan Special Dark or the Cruzan Coconut Rum.}

But, I would still love every one! 8)

Use it however you would use Goslings Black Seal rum. I find the Cruzan version to be more Molassasy (if that's a word). Barrits Ginger Beer or Goya Ginger Beer have enough kick to cut the cloying sweetness.

Black strap is to be used as a floater on top of a maitai, pina colada, rum punch etc. Do not stir! This from a former Cruzan rep. The ginger beer works also
