VG Part 4 - Honey from Whoville
VG Part 4 - Honey from Whoville
Much to the chagrin of my peeps this morning, psycho rooster and his posse decided the grounds around Alamander would be a choice spot to get the cock-a-doodle-doo on. Since I'm totally a morning girl, I was up at 6:00 sprawled out on a deck chair enjoying the view and early island sounds but I could hear Drama Girl groaning through her bedroom slats and mumbling "can someone shut that chicken the hell up?" Um, it's a rooster honey but that would be a no. He'll shut up when he's ready, or you can hope he'll move on to someone else's dwelling. Upon reflection however, maybe I'd better shut him the hell up. I would rather not have hell hath no fury girl coming down on me do to lack of beauty rest! Yeah that's a smart idea, let's do that! In the boudoir as I'm choosing my bikini for the day, some scary a$$ looking stranger comes barreling out of the bathroom with a sh*t eatin grin on his face. I'm pretty sure it was the mayor of Whoville but I asked "who are you and what have you done with Honey?" He laughs and says he decided to shave off his stache so that he did not have to put up with a leaky mask for the entire trip. I'm really not too keen on being hitched to a relative of Cindy Lou Who so as I'm wondering how long it will take to grow back, I told him to "NEVER DO THAT AGAIN!" "EVER!"
I'm beginning to think there are not mosquitoes on this island because the only bite I have is the one that's reminding me it's not ladylike to stand there doing the man scratch. Since the back of my legs were deep fried yesterday, the plan this morning is to have a leisurely breakfast, then drive up to the trail head for the hike to Gorda Peak. We really aren't hiking peeps per say, but I thought okay, it will be fun. It could work. We decided to drive over to Fishers Cove and have breakfast on the water. It was fun enjoying my Mango French Toast while watching the sea birds feast on Crab a la carte and it was completely chillaxing to sit there and view the sailboats floating past us out on the beautiful water. Our server was really sweet too!
<a href="http://s87.photobucket.com/albums/k138/ ... C_1015.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k138/ ... C_1015.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
So we head on down the road and a few island minutes later we arrive at the lower trailhead. Now I didn't know that there are two trailheads, an upper and a lower so we drive up the beginning of the trail and park the Jeep (Ok, it's a Grand Vitara) in the dirt parking area. Drama Girls bit*hing started as soon as she read the sign that said 50 minutes to the peak viewing area. Gawd, why do they have post that kind of info? I mean I thought we'd be able to get past the first 10 minutes or so anyway. So we head up the trail with our water bottles and me in my Teva flip flops and I'm sure you can guess what comes next; "OMG! It's freaking hot." "I don't know if I feel up to this." "This is not my idea of a fun time!" Then the spastic hand flapping and "EEEEEaaHHHH! A BUG! A HUGE, HUGE BUG!" Umm yeah, we are on a trail in the forest, what, there are no bugs here? At this point I just decided to tune her out and plug on along toward the top. Where the hell is my IPOD when I need it? Critter Boy is euphoric as he has already spotted like 15 hermit crabs, 17 lizards, several pre-historic size bugs that he tried unsuccessfully to show to Drama Girl (that was fun cause I made him stay the hell away from me with those things), a few butterflies and then running up ahead, "A SNAKE! A SNAKE!" So now this bit if info sends Drama Girl into a full on freak out attack and I seriously thought she was going to run up the nearest tree as Nick tried to catch him but he had already slithered off into the bush. Now I'm not a sissy girl (well ok, maybe I am a little), but I don't do snakes or pre-historic bugs and that kid's been catching snakes and bringing them in the house since he could walk. Lucky me! Pretty soon we passed a lady and her kid. She was seriously bit*hing and had to chime in with "you've got a ways to go yet!" Gee thanks lady, Drama Girl so needed to hear that.
After 40 minutes of fat burning with a few cardio bursts thrown in for good measure (YES!), we made it to the viewing platform. You climb 3 steep sets of stairs to the top and your reward is a gorgeous view of the valley below and beyond. It's a little high up so those of you that have issue with heights or climbing stairs might want to give it some thought first. Climbing back down is worse than climbing up. We snap a few pics and congratulate ourselves on being masters of the mountain then well, there's not a bar up there so we need to be heading down now. "OMG! Another 40 minutes back down?" Yep, cause unless you want to lasso one of those pre-historic bugs and ride him, I'm afraid you'll just have to walk.
<a href="http://s87.photobucket.com/albums/k138/ ... C_1031.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k138/ ... C_1031.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
By the time we made it back down, you'd have thought we'd been traversing the Mojave Desert for the past several days so what next? Nothing but the beach baby! Destination: Savannah Bay! We arrived in the parking area and couldn't get out of the car fast enough. I'm pretty sure I left a trail of clothes and shoes up to that first lovely palapa, then just threw myself headlong straight into the water. After submersing myself, I looked around and realized what a stunner Savannah Bay is. A long and deserted white sand beach with crystal blue waters and charming palapas placed every so often to protect you from the burning, fiery sun. You can walk out into the water forever and only be waist deep too! Again, IMHO, every bit as gorgeous as my favorites on STJ! Since I was cooled off and good for about 3 minutes now, I decided to grab my camera, walk the length of the beach and snap some quick shots. This required a longer length of time then a 3 minute span so afterward I was good and ready for a long, relaxing snorkel. The sightings here were fabulous including some nice Scroll Coral and a Bearded Fireworm?

After everyone has their fill of sun, sand and snorkel, we decide it's time for some grub and I am jones-ing for some feel good drinks and a pile of Nachos. It's a good thing I'm a trip planner girl and I know where to get some huh? Score one for the trip planner girl! We hop in the car and head out to The Cove Bar & Grill at Leverick Bay. The ride out there is really very pretty and the resort has a real feel good to it. I'm liking this fact since we have plans to party with the Jumbies here tomorrow night. Another positive factor in driving out the day before is that the mayor of Whoville won't go and get us lost! Well, it was worth the drive cause those Nachos were the best I had during the entire trip. Wish I could have some now.
Note to self: Must go back for the Nachos!
<a href="http://s87.photobucket.com/albums/k138/ ... C_1034.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k138/ ... C_1034.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
After billing our bellies, checking out the resort, and a spot of shopping on Honey, we want to hit another beach for the rest of the afternoon so next up? Mahoe Bay. I really liked this area of the island and I could totally see the villa appeal of being on Mahoe. The villas are gorgeous and you can be right on a stunning stretch of beach with a pool and a view that will rock your world! Must think on this Mahoe villa thing! The beach is truly lovely. I'm overdosing on eye candy here, it's awesome! After drooling over the private villas for a spell, it's time to get our snorkel on again so we head into the water to do the right side of the bay. Within 5 minutes, we saw a turtle, Barracuda and what Critter Boy thought to be an eel but was actually a Rock Hind I think. We are getting in some really great snorkeling here and as Drama Girl and I are floating along, Dory arrived from the EAC (East Australian Current) and yes I watch too much Disney! She was so funny! You know that part when Dory forgot that she told Marlin "a boat!? I saw a boat! It went this way, follow me!?" Well, I felt like I was living Finding Nemo. She kept trying to dodge us with those sharp, tactical turns so I started singing "just keep swimming, swimming, swimming..." through my snorkel. I guess Drama Girl found it totally humorous cause she ended up breaking the seal on her mask and sucked up a nose full of sea water. Upon seeing this, I lost the seal on mine so we decided we were being too elementary school to continue on so we head up to the beach for some cookie baking while the boys continued their snorkel run.
<a href="http://s87.photobucket.com/albums/k138/ ... C_1202.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k138/ ... C_1202.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
By this time, we're thinking we are all sunned out for the day and started the trek back to Guavaberry where after relaxing a bit then cleaning up, and watching the sunset out on deck, we headed over for our ressies up in the boulders by the waterfall at The Rock Cafe. Really quick Drama Girl is shrieking that Nick brought a lizard friend along for the ride and it's lost in the car. That was pretty. The Rock is a really cool restaurant with a great menu. We were getting low on carbs again so it's all about the pasta. We had the Spaghetti Alla Rock and the Penne Boscaiola with white sauce. OMGoodGodfey! Both of these pasta dishes were too die for! Drama Girl and I had to tacky up and split our plate in half so we could have some of each, it was that good! Freaking delish! Critter Boy had the Cheeseburger & Fries with the Chocolate Mousse for dessert. Shocker. We had a couple Banana Rocks to drink but the monster bottles of water we slurped down were enjoyed more than anything due to the dehydration factor. I will say that we had a really lousy server but the food and atmosphere totally made up for it. Oh BTW, no food porn this day. I prefer to view it, not do it!
After dinner we were all seriously comatose so we head straight back to the cottage and stumble into bed mumbling "g'night" to each other. Sheesh, all this limin is doing me in! I can write a trip report. It's just so much more fun to tell the story!
Next Up: Anegada-da-vida Baby!

Another great report. Love your photos.
Wonder if you had the same server as we had at the Rock Café. Ours wasn't very good either and we also had him in the past. But like you said, the food totally make up for this.
BTW - I can't tell the difference between the mom and the daughter on the pic from Gorda Peak. You look like sisters.

OK this is getting ridiculous. We had breakfast at Fischers Cove and dinner at Rock Cafe too. Maybe had the same not so friendly server, which is quite the exception in the BVIs - most folks are way pleasant.
Didnt hike Gorda Peak, took the drive out past Savannah, Mahoe, Nail, and all the way up to Long Bay with intentions of snorkeling but had squalls moving thru.

Hey Chrisn,
You are very funny! I'm enjoying reading your reports. I just told my wife about your husband shaving his stash off and she laughed her azz off, it's especially funny because I want to shave my stash off before our trip. They really do screw with your mask. I've only shaved it off once since we met 20 years ago, and she shot me a very serious look and said "YOU WILL NEVER DO THAT AGAIN", then of course I said why not? and she said "NEVER". Wish me luck.
Great trip reports!

Hi chrisn. Your trip reports are giving me BIG chuckles! Sounds like you guys had a great trip and really have fun being together. You're making wonderful memories. Looking forward to more.
As an aside, I'm a big fan of Nemo and Dory. Between watching with my daughter (now 15) and my 6 year old grandson, I must have seen/listened to it dozens of times. It never fails to make me laugh. If anyone wants to waste a little time, here's the "Just keep swimming" clip that I watch every now and then. Hope you don't mind me sticking this in here, chrisn, but your installment reminded me of it.
(Yes, I'm grown and still like animated children's movies.

As for mustaches and snorkel masks---I was thinking about shaving my mustache prior to a trip some years ago. I'd previously tried (without much success) vaseline or other products specific for snorkeling with a mustache. For some reason I had the thought to put my mask on and look at myself in a mirror. To my surprise, the mask covers much less of the upper lip than I'd envisioned. It actually covers very little of it, only a very small area right under my nose. There was no need to shave the whole mustache. All that I needed to do was trim a little bit right under my nose. Hardly noticed it. It made a significant difference in the seal I got and i didn't have to get used to myself without a mustache.
FANTASTIC REPORT!!!!!
Since staches are now a topic up for discussion... I had one until my 30th birthday. Then I shaved it and was like, what the heel did i have that thing for? I have seen some fat staches on some recent TR's (xislandgirls friends hubby had a phat one) and started missing it.
We should have a poll of to stache or not to stache!!!
